Not sure if this is in the proper section. I apologize if it's not.  I see a lot of guys on here that design tables, parts and all kinds of stuff using different cad programs.  Google sketchup is one that I have heard mentioned but I was wondering what everyone was using for 3d modeling.   I have some CAD background, and am really just looking to design some stuff and see how angles and what not effect my designs.  Nothing structural, just garage stuff.  Shop press, tables, log splitter type stuff. Don't know if there is anything in my price range that I can do this type of stuff with, ie. free.
Reply:I use Alibre 3D Design, Personal Edition (now called GeoMagic somethingortheother).  About $200.  Does everything I need.  You can get a 30-day trial, but you have to register with the site and email a request to the sales department.  That is how I figured out it would work for me.  There service department has been great (you need to contact them, when you change computers, to get a new code, but they are super fast and efficient with that).  There is a forum for Alibre, if you want to see what others think of it.If you can wait, they have REALLY good Cyber Monday deals.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:SketchUp is a 3d modeling product and it's free.  Don't get much better than that.  There are already bunches of stuff designed and available in SketchUp format.http://www.sketchup.com/
