Im working on a project and i need to weld 1/8 inch steel to 22 gauge steel. I have a hobart handler 187 .030 wire co2 gas and its a tap style welder. How can i make sure that the weld sticks to the 1/8 inch with out blowing thru the 22 gauge and falling off post some pics if you can.
Reply:Concentrate the heat on the thicker material and push or sweep th puddle to the thiner.
Reply:It would help to know the joint design you're planning to weld, .First thing I 'd do though, is install a roll .023 wire on the unit instead of the .030. Secondly, CO² wouldn't be my choice for shielding gas either. I'd go with C25. If I remember right though, your trying to use up the bottle of CO² before switching to C25.If you have access to the back of the 22 ga., you can use a copper or aluminum backer bar to sink some of the heatESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:Im planing a lap joint with the thicker steel under the 22 gauge. Yes i am trying to use all the co2 befor going to c25. I just got a 11 lb roll of .030 so im not going to .023 anytime soon.
Reply:Not sure what's going on here but the 22 gauge is gonna warp like crazy..Pics before destruction? So we can maybe prevent destruction?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Part of one of my daily projects at work, I would love to see the results. I fight with this everyday, and unless it's new clean equipment I do it with stick. Show some pics when your done. Tough bro, be quick on the draw! I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I am not running a bead it will have to be hot tacks. The 22 guage is the door jamb of my car and the 1/8 inch is the plate im installing for a single hinge suicide back door. I was thinking if i get the steel hot with a blow torch the tack wouldnt have to be so hot so it wont blow thru the 22 gauge.
Reply:You really need some practice runs first if asking anyway..Get some material like you are playing with and experiment where you don't care before doing something that you do care about..Pre heating the 1/8" is a waste of time. It's just a matter of practice. No matter who tells you what you need to play first....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:A Blowtorch! Ughhhhhhhh! Who says blowtorch anymore, I just crapped my briches! I think my trousers got in the mix too! I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:A lap joint constructed out of 22ga and 1/8" with the 1/8" being the bottom peice shouldn't be that difficult, especially if you'd quit being cheap and switch over to the correct wire size for the job. In the amperage range you'll be running, the .023 wire is going to have a higher current density then the .030. Plus the .023 weld puddle is going to develop a little slower. Both of these translate into the .023 giving you a better chance of producing a good bond (fusion) between the weld metal and the 1/8", especially when using the series of tacks method. As has already been stated, direct your arc at the 1/8" material, and just let the weld puddle flow over and catch the edge of the 22 ga.. Practice on some  scrap like Zap has recommended.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:im not being cheap im being broke LOL. Yes its a blowtorch not oxy acetylene a blowtorch with mapp gas.
Reply:I doubt the door jamb is that thin, 22 gauge, but you may be better served by the help of a couple buttonhole welds through the hinge into the sheet.best
Reply:Funny thing pistolnoon i took pics today.!st pic show the thickness of the steels 1/8 inch being the thicker.2nd pic is with heat settings on 5 wire speed about 35 tacks with a quick roll into the thin metal.3rd pic is the door jamb yes pic sucks and it is a nightmare but you can see the 1/8 im welding into place.4th pic is for fun that is a pic of the junk and the jewel LOL
Reply:anyone no help on this
Reply:single hinge suicide back door.
Reply:REALY the suicide hinge makes the car door open backwards their called suicide like the 64 lincoln continental.
