It's  and I'm digging around in the archives   Over 100 outside, so it's a good time to play on the keyboard.I took a series of photos of the welds on a recent project, the fencing deal.These guys.......The day was the usual day here in OK, hot and windy.  Gusts to around 40.The material was 7018 Excalibur 3/32 rod at around between 7 and 8 in the 80amp range on the Ranger.  Mostly sunny Now, I'm definitely not the king of uphill.  Passable, but not something you'd take home to yer mother I noticed that the welds deteriorated from top to bottom.  The less comfortable I was, the worse the welds got.  Something I got to work on.The topmost weld.  I'm in the zone   Standing, well braced.Next weld down.  Semi bent over and looking down through the arc at the puddle.Next one.  I think I was finally in a position to squat, and look up at the puddle underneath the arc, sorta reaching not really firm positionMore to follow, there's 7 of these "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Still squatting, looking at the puddle from the side at this point if I remember.Sitting on my butt, reaching overhead to some degree.  You can really see the deterioration here.Still sitting, about face on with the weld.  Welding over a tackAnd probably the worst............ Laying on my side trying to see what's going on So, in a large part, it's all about learning to weld in the most uncomfortable position you can imagine without messing up the quality of the weld.  I've got a ways to go, but at least I think I've identified the problem.  Or not "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:They appear to be suffecient, inconsistances for sure. Out of position welding is an art form in itself.I prefer to lay on my back on top of boilers to weld over-head on headers, rather than reach from a ladder. In a situation of the uphill welds in your pic, I would have tacked top, bottom and middle with 6010. Then from a reasonably comfortable standing position, welded top. Layed on my side for bottom, and on my knees for middle.
