I have a new drill press that I am going to set up this evening and I have a few questions about it.1) What should I use to clean the packing grease off of it. I have some green machine or something like that I use on tractors, is that stuff ok?2) What can I coat it with to keep it from rusting yet not attrack dust and dirt? Thanks for your helpSlim
Reply:Oops, the green cleaner is  called simple green not green machine.
Reply:I'd use "Mineral spirits" to clean off the preservative.I use "LPS #2" on my work benchs, machine tables, and columns to prevent rust.
Reply:I use plain old Johnsons Paste Wax on my drill press, saws, etc.  Seems to work better than any oil or grease based products I've used.Allen T.
Reply:Don't use WD 40 it does work well, it will not protect in humid environments and it has a boat load of silicone oil in it.  I use several products, LPS 2 is most likely what you can get easily and works well.Any petroleum solvent should work well most of the industrial RP's (rust preventives) use a high flash solvent in the original product.  Better known to us as kerosene.  I would recommend that or diesel fuel if you don't mind the odor.Last edited by Shade Tree Welder; 05-29-2004 at 11:31 PM.Ron ShopFloorTalk Millermatic 350P, M-25, M-40 gunsDynasty 300DX, Coolmate 3, Crafter CS-310 TorchTrailblazer 302, 12RC, WC-2430A spoolgunSpectrum 2050Thermal Arc Plasma Welder PS-3000/WC-100B

Reply:Originally posted by rusted Where to get LPS2?  Cheapest I see is $5.80 for an 11oz can plus shipping.
Reply:I got some for $8 finally.  It's the same thing as the gun lube we've used for decades.  At least it smells and acts the same.
