Science Toy XVII Magnetic ArtThis is probably the main reason I made the ring roller. See http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ht=ring+rollerFor ring roller thread.I got the idea from this build from the following thread: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=26225The state of Ohio has changed the standards so magnetism is one of the concepts I have to teach. The ring is made from aluminum flat stock ½ x 2 and is 22 in diameter. The 10 neodymium magnets are from K&J Magnetics Part Number http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=RC48The wire is guitar string. The magnets on the ring are held in place with stainless steel screws.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Not what I expected from the title. I expected the usual metal filings and magnetic poles "picture" you frequently see at the science museum..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:a1998,it's art. It uses magnetism to hold the wires tight.Nicely done Reebs. Keep the projects coming. Next do a free floating wheel in the ring. if done right you should be able to make the wheel spin without touching anything. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:a1998It is mainly to look at and get the kids asking questions. They mess around with it and helps them recall North South pole stuff. Plus we test what affects the mag field items such as paper - aluminum - copper - wood - steel.I have not tried this yet but I was thinking of putting some mag (bigger and more strenght) in a glove to see buy running my hand over the ring will it knock a few mag off.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:It was really very simple just ran it in the ring roller a few times. The aluminum was a drop piece and I purchased it by weight, I was shocked at the cost of of the stuff.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Nice, I've enjoyed watching your post on the roller and was think of making one..Might be a little hard for me to find a Amish guy around here...Thanks.
Reply:Very cool. I am sixty three years old and I still love magnets...(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah: Go Big Red! (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:strube1369Mag. are fun kind of magical. In a workshop for teachers I would hand out 80 of the neodymium mags (2 to each teacher). My hands would cramp from having to separate them, they are so strong. The funny part is I would warn everyone "watch out they will bite when they slam together". Everyone would be careful for a minute or two then the mag. would start slamming into each other and blood blisters would grow.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:A couple years ago at work we bought some drain plugs with super magnets on them and you should have seen us. Just like your workshops. Trying to pull the magnets apart instead of sliding them apart. It's all fun and games until somebody has a blood blister. Reply:The mag have a hole in them to run a string or wire in them. Plane string worked fine maybe better, but after some time they seemed to StretchDave ReberWadsworth Ohio |
