6g tig root run

Hey, I'm doing my certification for 6G. I'm doing Tig root run and a full with E7018 low hydrogen with a capping with E7018. Problem is when I do the root run I'm not getting enough penetration with the TIG.... What are some possible causes??

Reply:How much of the thickness of the wire are you holding inside the land? Reply:Land size 1.6 - 2 mm Bevel angle 60 degrees Root Gap 2mm. Pipe is 150mm with 10mm wall. Thanks heaps guys

Reply:Why the land?  Almost all tig root is done knife edge.  You should find lots of good articles here and Millers.   Easier to learn with larger wire...1/8 in. wire, tight 1/8 in. gap, 85-90 amps....on bottom concentrate your arc on mid to bottom of wire, feed about 3 times rate of travel until the bead you see takes on convex shape.  On top, less feed and arc motion is top of bevel, across wire, to other top, bead shape will be concave.  Sides will be variants of bottom and top.
