I just need some simple bends to make a roof rack. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:I've bent 3/4" tubing using a 1/2" emt bender with reasonable results. Reply:Thanks, I need a few bends for a roof rack. But can't afford to waste any steel. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Reply:Well, idk I this 1/2-3/4 would work. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:I'm not sure how tubing is sized, but I think in 14gSent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:A conduit bender should work just fine for this. It may just take a little more effort to do than the conduit normally requires. As far as that's concerned, you could bend it with a HAMMER if you don't care how it looks afterwards.
Reply:Oh I care, I was thinking, some mild heat on the bend. I want to make a fairly simple roof rack for my car. This will not canary a lot of weight, and I have an 2001 Honda CRV. so this isn't monster anything. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Reply:if you are worried about crimping it with the bender, fill the tube with sand and the sand will help prevent collapse of the walls.  Of course, empty sand and rinse out after bending.30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30"  vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press
Reply:Poor mans bending die. Make a wood buck for the radius you want. Heat the tube and then bend around the buck. Dont mind the smoke. Reply:Why not just make the rack out of EMT?Long arc, short arc, heliarc and in-the-dark!

Reply:Okay so steel tubing is measured by outside diameter like EMT? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Reply:You should be able to use a conduit bender. I have a 1/2" & 1" and use them all the time, the thicker the wall the harder to bend. Pay attention to the offset arrow ^ it will screw you up. But since you have a welder? you could make bends and weld to them making all of your cuts straight pieces. As far as galvanizing goes grind as much as you can and let the white soot fly just don't breathe it inThermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
Reply:3/4" tubing is a nice snug fit in the 1/2" emt bender. The last thing I bent up was this little front rack/crash bar using the emt bender. 3/4" tubing, 1/2" bender. Pay no attention to the mix of round and square. This is a 20 year old quad. Wasn't about to put a lot of new material into it. Used pieces laying around. The whole front got smashed up and all I wanted was some protection put back on. Reply:sandy, an 'emt' bender is just like a conduit bender?  like the ones with the fiberglass handles, just asking        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3
Reply:So Sandy, just to be clear, was it pipe or tubing that you bent? One is measured I/D and one O/D correct? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:I was under in impression that the "T" in EMT stood for tubing? That's why I thought I could bend some thin wall tubing. And I gotta figure this out for my next post, notching pipe on a bench mount drill press? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Sent from my iPad using TapatalkI just went and did a quick measurement or two. The 3/4" structural tubing I have laying around is about .756 to .777 OD and .050 wall depending on where you measure. No not all pipe or tube is exact to size or perfectly round. The 1/2" emt is about .706 OD."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
