I had an old cheapo horizontal band saw laying around that I haven't used since I got an Ellis saw awhile back, and figured I might as well make some use of it.  A few hours of work, some scrap metal, and this is what I came up with for a vertical band saw.  I plan to order a nice vertical band saw within the next couple weeks, but this will get the couple small projects I need it for, done this week.  May try and order a narrower blade for it, but other then that it works pretty well!  Still need to put the switch in a housing, and make a guard for the exposed blade.  I modified the top blade guide so that it can be lowered down as close as needed to material, mounted the saw to the table with two pieces of "telescoping" tubing (one under the table, and one attached to the saw), and used a scrap piece of 1/8" stainless sheet metal for a table. Reply:I was thinking of investing in a second harbor freight bandsaw to do the same thing. Only because a real metal bandsaw is really expensive. Great idea. You should make a rolling stand for it! Wish there was a way to turn the guides so the blade faces straight so it's like a normal bandsaw.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Ha, I too picked up an Ellis as well.  I got the 1600, which one did you get?  Was just out in the garage lifting the Ellis' head into vertical position, but the entire head is resting on the plastic knob for the spring tension adjustment when it's in the vertical position, does yours do that too?  If it weren't for that, I'd make the table for the vertical position already.I was just thinking what i should do with my old 4x6, and I think I will do the vertical conversion just like you did.  Ellis' 1" wide blade isn't too useful as a vertical saw anyway.

Reply:My 7x12 horizontal simply lifts into the vertical position and used. I don't use it in the vertical position much but I do.
