i have a cjp TC-U4A joint design. My problem is this: The top weld the backing bar stays on and a 5/16 reinforcing weld is applied, on the bottom the backing bar is removed, backgoughed and a 5/16 plus gap reinforcing weld is done. Now i have been doing these the same way for a few years NR233 filler and excaliber stick for all the reinforcement. I have a inspector telling me that i can not mix the two metals, i am telling him that they are both the same with the same high charpy notch values. Can any one tell me of documentation on whether i am wright or wrong?
Reply:Get the data sheets from the wire and rod manufacture and compare. Then if the same you can hand them to your inspector. to prove your point.
Reply:Contact Lincoln. They have people on staff that can give you a definitive answer. I know the name of the contact person for fillers and his number has been listed here before, but it's probably not going to be the easiest thing to find here. I'd just go to Lincolns site and try that way 1st..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:question is why would you want to?    IF your set up for 232 then i would just run them out for 232.I think your going to either need to run a PQR for this particular combination of filler metals and joint configuration.  AS it is most definately not prequalified.A prime example of how even though two filler metals fall under the same Charpy V notch characteristics but are completely incompatible,   Try to weld over some Ultracore 71C with NR-232.    They are both AWS D1.8 compliant and meet the min charpy characteristics but if you try to mix them you will get a giant heaping pile of porosity and problems.     ITs complete and total oil and water. Actually its more akin to taking a cat swimming.Im afraid unless you get the procedure verified by a accredited testing facility the inspector is right.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
