Customer wanted fireplace completely enclosed to protect carpeting from projectile embers. Partial screens just didn't cut it. This fireplace is huge....44"x 72" and the entire structure is 20-something feet tall. Had to sit inside to scribe opening onto a sheet of plywood in order to develop plan back at my shop. Reply:Most of this thing was lots of bandsaw work. This pic kinda shows how I had to construct it as an insert... so that I would have a way to attach it permanently to the inside stones with custom brackets. You would not want this thing falling out onto a curious toddler. Attached Images

Reply:Butt welded a few scraps of 1/4 inch together in the rough shape of my full sized template....drew it out using a batten...and bandsawed it out using a combo of a saber saw and a portaband. Lots of fun.... Attached Images

Reply:Very nice SMC! How many hours in fabrication time? And if you don't mind my asking, what is a job like that worth in dollars? -Dan

Not counting a few hours of free planning, template work, and install, of course. You know how this business goes. Luckily, I have a day job as a welder for a construction company...and my garage/shop has virtually no overhead.
Reply:That's a great looking project!  What did you use for the screen, and how did you fasten it?JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
Reply:Very nice, simple and elegant, you did an awesome job.
Reply:Purchased this screening online from an outfit in CA. Just search for fireplace screen fabrics and you'll see it. It was about 5 bucks a sq. foot. Once I got it flattened out and cut out with snips...I attached the sections with 1/4 inch round-stock with tacks here and there...with the whole mess staying completely hidden behind the framework.
