Its not really an anvil, but it works well. Curious about its original design/intent. Guessing railroad, bridge, dock component. Pictures include ruler for scale. Its big, heavy, solid. Anyone???Hobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?
Reply:Maybe a tractor weight? It does appear to be John Deere green.
Reply:It may have even been an anvil. I've seen similar designs locally, except larger and longer, referred to as rail shop anvils. Whether or not it is one I haven't a clue...or for that matter if the term is even valid. From the height it would work well as an upsetting anvil in a blacksmith shop.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:Sheetmetal shop tool? The paint looks a lot like an industrial green.

Reply:Anvil used by saw filer to shrink and straighten blades.
Reply:It is a John Deere tractor weight.
Reply:Looks like a counter weight off a John Deere corn picker. My father in law had a few sitting around. If it works as an anvil then use it as one. I showed this picture to my wife and she called it a combine weight. DanLast edited by DanD78; 06-19-2014 at 09:39 PM.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:I want to get a steel wheel from an old rail road box car. Those things are heavy and can be beat on all day long. I once saw a custom modified one that was shaped into a "curved" anvil, back in the 80's. It was used to pound, heat and bend flat bar. The bottom 20% was cut straight and welded onto a piece of rail. The top had the outer lip cut and polished off. It was nice and Shiny.
