1.  Can the thin "welding" respirators fit under a "pipeliner" hood?  2.  Can the respirator fit under  a "tigerhood" model?3.  Pipeliner vs. Tigerhood  your personal opinions between the two?  (Fit, form, function and/or overall preference please).  4. "Rubber band" style head gear or ratchet style preference? To me, it looks as if the tigerhood model is just a helmet that is already "pre cut" for better fit against the chest/neck area.  Whereas seems like many take to giving their Pipeliner models some "surgery" and amputate the tops and/or bottom edges of the helmet.   Is this assumption correct? Thanks.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:I used a tigerhood for years. Up here you weld in the rain or you don't work much, so I liked the way the tigerhood fit against my chest to help stop the reflection off the yellow rain gear. I'd think you'd have better luck with the pipeliner hood! The tigerhood is flatter in the face part, where the pipeliner is more rounded. I never did like the rubber band, with gloves on I can't get it on my head right. With out gloves it always seemed to pull my hair. I only wear a welding cap if I'm doing a lot of overhead. Back in the day it was always hard hat welding hoods. God I hated those dam things! Reply:I have both and the pipeliner is definitely the better choice for me. Lighter, not as bulky way smaller and just all around more comfortable. I have two with the rubber band head gear, and not really that annoying, but annoying enough to ditch if you had a choice against the ratchet style. I don't wear respirators to often to respond to that but 3m makes a new kick azz tiny pancake style one with a quick release on the front to pop it open it a split second so you can tell someone to fck off in a split second then grab a quick sip of that sweet sweet hams. That one would fit if you put a paper bag over your head. Why would you put a paper bag over your head.......I don't know.....but just in case you wanted to you could. Reply:The Tigerhood and Pipeliner may appear somewhat similar superficially, but they are rather different. I can comment more on the Tigerhood, since I use one often. Mine is the big 4x5 window vs the smaller ones. TheIf you have to look down at something close to your stomach, the bottom hits your upper chest area and is very annoying. It needs to be cut away more, my Jackson is much less bulky. If you're welding something at a higher level or farther out from you it's fine. I just find it annoying when I'm standing right up against something and I need to look down and weld. It's also rather bulky overall, so that can be an annoyance. I do not like it if I am trying to work in/around stuff, it gets in the way a lot and hung up a lot. The Tigerhood is also made of a thick thermoplastic vs. fiberglass. It is not a light hood but is durable. Mine is this one. http://www.amazon.com/Thermoplastic-...0HPCRMF8BD32Q3I'm going to buy a Pipeliner before I go back to school this fall, and I'm going to drop an athermal lens in it to see how I like it. I like passive helmets a lot but I also love my Jackson Balder too.Hobart Stickmate LX235AC/160DCRanger 305GVictor 315 O/A rigHope to acquire in the next couple of years: Hypertherm PM45 and Dynasty 200DX
Reply:As mentioned, the Tigerhood, while it doesn't hit your throat, it will hit your chest if you try and look down.  It felt too clumsy for me.  A chopped pipeliner is can get you in tight spots, and isn't too heavy.  I've used a 3m respirator under mine, but the elements won't let the hood drop as far as I need it.  No problem with an auto dark lens, though.  I hated the rubber band at first, but it kinda grew on me.  It does suck to adjust.  I taped one side of mine to help with the slippage.  The adjusting is the worst when you have it set for summer, then you try to wear a woolie under the hood.  I did switch to the ratchet, and the worst part of it is it will catch the top of the pipeliner if you don't have much chopper and try to swing it all the way up.
Reply:I use the flip window Tigerhood myself. I have an AD lens in mine. You can use a pancake style respirator under the tiger hood. I like the tiger hood for its throat protection it offers for over head welding.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Thanks guys for the opinions and suggestions.  I think it's the pipelines for me.  I just like the look and how well rounded it fits close to one's face and appears to offer greater UV/arc protection. CEP, you brought up a good pint about the rubber band manipulation with glove.  I would hate that.  Weldermike, I forgot that you are a true-blue beer drinker, that also enjoys Hamm's (my favorite)!!!  We talked about that about a year ago.  After all, what else is there when it comes to beer???  The most interesting man in the world drinks Dos XX's in commercials, but after he gets home from work, he cracks open a Hamm's.  "The beer refreshing..."Except my stupid one and only source (local BevMo) for Hamm's, stopped carrying it.  Bastards!Last edited by SuperArc; 05-01-2014 at 08:45 AM.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Just an update...I finally got the Pipeliner and my pancake style respirator does fit just fine underneath it, if I need it.  I like the pipeliner!!!  I'll probably put a gold lens in it though, because I like those better.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:@ SuperArc - Pipeliner.  No substitute.  You'll jettison your ADFs. "Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Just an update.... Comparing both style of helmets.I now have both helmets.  I like the Pipeliner the best, but I definitely need to mod it by cutting the bottom 1.25" off.   The Tigerhood allows me to look down over a table a little easier than the Pipeliner.  But as others here have pointed out, the Tigerhood feels more flimsy on my head.   Both style helmets I have, I ordered with the sturdy "ratchet" headgear, which I absolutely love. Both helmets accept the pancake 3M style respirators, but when used with the Pipeliner, a simple nod of the head still requires an extra "tap" of the hand to seat the helmet down all the way over my face.  For the Tigerhood, a simple head nod will drop the helmet down all the way without any hickup.   Maybe my face is just to fat! The Pipeliner also shields out more natural backlight (like sunlight) both over my head and behind me at various angles (ie 4 and 6 o'clock positions).  The Tigerhood because of it being a wider helmet around my face than the Pipeliner,  allows natural light to creep up behind as well as topside into the helmet,  when I'm welding outside.  I do so much of my welding outside and with bright direct sunlight, that the glare from behind the helmets bug the crap out of me.  I think I'll eventually invest in a right hander's "pancake" style with the balsa wood eye wrap shield.  As most of you already know, those cut out ALL direct and indirect back light glare when welding.   I normally use an EZ-Up or small sun shade over me, but the winds were I live blow them around constantly during the afternoons, which is the only time frame I'm afforded to weld.  Anyway, both helmets are great!  If I could only choose one however, for me it's the Pipeliner.  Thanks for the opinions on them fellas. Reply:Pipeliner any day of the week a throw the rubber band in the garbage can a put the tigerhood head gear in it and set the rest of the tiger in the corner. Or buy the ratchet head gear if you don't have a parts hood laying around. Just what worked for me.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup

Reply:Good to know they sent you some good head gear with it. The only thing I liked about the rubber band was that you could flip your lid all the way back and it would stay but the constant working loose and not being able to put it on one handed sent me back to the ratchet.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup
