Hi,I'm a complete noob to the forum, so I apologize for what to me seems important but to you experienced welders will be hilarious.I'm looking to get into a new career as a welder. And I would like to know what you experienced welders have to say to those of us that want to start out in the welding business. Anyone gone through the private colleges that do 10 week training courses, 300 hours of work in 10 weeks. What do you recommend to become licensed/certified and a skilled welder. I want to get into welding since i've always wanted to do it for a long time, but got side swiped by a different career. Ignoring that, I just want to jump into a career of welding and continue learning everything that I can about it and become a skilled welder. Is it best to go through community college or private colleges that do fast tracked 300 hours of work in 10 weeks, or do I look to get hired as a entry level welder while in school? What do you guys recommend.I live in Ontario, Canada.Thank you for any informationLast edited by truths; 06-06-2014 at 10:08 AM.
Reply:I recommend taking a one year college course. You will come out with skills and knowledge in all welding and cutting processes. The 10-12 week course may only educate you in one welding process (stick welding). You will also come out of a one year course with a diploma. The 10-12 week course will give you a certificate. However, both the one year course and 10-12 week course should give you the opportunity to do the all position CWB structural stick welding test and that's your goal, to obtain that ticket.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:The way I was thinking about it was to get the ticket and atleast become familiar and have a certificate to always quote that i'd have a certain level of competency. The entry level welding program I was looking at in Peterborough, does the 10 weeks/300 hours of welding on SMWA/GMAW/FCAW/GTAW. And its all hands on training which is what I believe is a great start. As much as i'd like to do the college route, im thinking maybe this rapid course and entry into welding is the best thing to get into, and start working as a welder, and then get all the necessary tickets while im already a welder. Thank you for your reply, your response helped me just a bit more figuring out my welding career.
Reply:Great. In my opinion, it is better than any other career choice since it offers more choices of industries to work in. You will get more opportunities in fields like Robotics, Engineering, Inspection, Education etc if you have cleared out a welding course. And yeah, I too think that a one year course would be better. Otherwise you may not be properly trained. It is not something that just needs subject knowledge. You should study it in deep so that you can use it for practical applications. But be sure that you choose a good welding course training centre. Weldtech training at Ontario is one of the good institutions which I know. Have a good start. All the best for your future. |
