Just got a call today regarding hardfacing loader chains... What would be the best approach on a job like this? He mentioned the hard facing needs to be spot welded per the instructions to maintain base metal strength. I'm picturing getting a good ground may be an issue. The chains are large (roughly 5'x15') and weigh about 400#.  Is this a job to avoid? Time/material rather than bid it...?Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller 252 Miller 250xMiller Syncrowave 250Miller AEAD200 LegendMiller 375 Xtreme plasmaLincoln WeldPak 100Victor O/A
Reply:I would avoid it. Even if you have really detailed instructions from the manufacturer on how to do it without affecting base metal strength, in case of a failure you would have to prove that you followed them exactly which is not always easy.
Reply:Are you talking about knocker chain inside the bucket ...usually big anchor chain with weights on the ends they slam around and clean the bucket out of sticky materialsBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:I think he's talking tire chains, they are put together like a big chain net for more traction.

Reply:Never done it but I'd just do cost plus on it and get them to sign off after saying done to customer specification
Reply:Well, I passed on the job after discussing it with some other welding buddies. Sounds like it is a major PITA and I really don't need the work at this point.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller 252 Miller 250xMiller Syncrowave 250Miller AEAD200 LegendMiller 375 Xtreme plasmaLincoln WeldPak 100Victor O/A
Reply:Loader chains are also used for snow moving work. It wears them a lot, as they are running on dryish pavement a lot of the time too. I've seen hardfaced chains in that application a lot.
Reply:As a young kid I built up truck tire chains.  I put small beads on the flats and they seemed to work ok.  No fractures and the links lasted as long as new.  I just used old reliable E 6013 :')  I would be more concerned hard facing links since they would be more prone to fracture if not done correctly.
Reply:I use to do Log Skidder Chains in my off time out in Northwestern PA/ Southwest NY.Lay them on a sheet of plywood, start at one end and slowly work your way through each piece.Of course you always had to repair and build up a bunch of worn out junk first as these guys hated buying new chains!
