I think I found the limits of my Logan 12 x 48 lathe with this project! I'm machining a spindle for the tubing bender I'm building, and the blank is 6.5" dia. x 13" long 4350 alloy steel. Some parts of the finished spindle will be the 6.5" dia, and I need almost the full length, too. Some areas have to be turned down to 3" dia, though, so it's going to take a while! I have about 1/4 between the bottom of the blank and the top of the carriage, and with the crossfeed backed off all the way I can just get a first pass in with the cutting tool. Unfortunately the only other lathe I have access to is the one we have at work. It happens to be the same size, and was bought about 10 years ago from Enco, so it was made by the "Hu-Flung-Dung Machine Company" and is not nearly as solid as the Logan...Jason
Reply:oh it could work.... maybe
Reply:Go easy and it will do it as is. Might help to buy some clearance if you remove the compound and mount the toolpost directly to the cross slide. Custom toolpost setup that clears farther back, maybe? |
