Just started using steel to make some light weight trade show stuff. I like how rigid steel is compared to aluminum tube I've been using but the extra weight is not good, so I'm going with very thin walls. Does anyone know of a company that makes/sells very skinny steel tube like 1/4" wide by 1/2" rectangular tube? or 3/8x3/8" square tube or something like that.I got some steel BAR from alro.com that is 5/16 x 1/2" but the stuff flexes more than I care for and it's heavy stuff when an average structure is 150 linear feet of it  at .6 lb/ft.  why does bar flex more than tube? Must be due to the internal geometry?!?http://www.tottentubes.com/square-steel-tubing californiahttp://www.aladdinsteel.com/products..._steel_tubing/ illinoisean of course mcmastercarr sells it for very high prices. I googled a few above, but hopping to find south east coast supplier of the 3/8x 3/8" tube or if I can find 1/4x1/2" that would be cool too. With aluminum I could buy a die for $1700 and a minimum order of 1000 lbs and get any shape i wanted. can you do something similar for steel? Obviously it's not extruded but is getting custom tube sizes in steel just as simple?
Reply:Nowhere down south,  they only make all that stuff up North and out West.

Reply:Most metal companies distribute steel products they don't actually make every thing they sell, so your response doesn't really make sense to me I buy aluminum made in USA and China from eastern metal and they are next door to me
Reply:How far are you from Tampa Florida?

Reply:I'm 9 hrs away from Tampa, but distance is not that big of a deal. If I could find a 1/4" wide tube either square or rectangular I'd order a few hundreds sticks and have them cut down and shipped via truck on a palette. 3/8" square is somewhat rare, but not impossible to find, so I'm seeing if I can get that locally first.

Reply:called up lousiana steel since their web site says they do custom , but they said that size was too smallhttp://www.louisianasteel.com/videos.htmlneat video showing how the process is done though, too bad it is so blurry.

Reply:Altho more expensive than mild steel, aircraft grade 4130 tubing is available in 1/2 x 1/2 x 0.035 wall (0.221 lb/lin. ft.) from homebuilt aircraft materials suppliers like Aircraft Spruce ( http://www.aircraft-spruce.com/catal...4130square.php). Wicks Aircraft is another I have bought from. They also show 1/2 x 1/2 x 0.065 wall mild steel ERW (electrical resistance welded) tubing that is lots cheaper than the 4130. It will be nearly twice the weight per lin. ft. of the 0.035 wall "good" stuff. Both will ship via UPS (within size & weight constraints, of course). For larger orders, truck shipping should be more cost effective & quantity discounts may be available.Lee
