Hi,How do you grind the inside weld on square tube?  I am trying to make a clean fit between a section of 1.5" x 3/16" square tube that I want to insert into a section of 2" x 1/4" square tube.  The square tube has a weld on the inside that runs the length of it.  The total length is 1 foot.  Is there any tool that can get in there to grind down the weld?Neil
Reply:something like this should work, there are many different mfgs of these types of tools, this one happens to be from harbor freighthttp://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92158I have also seen air powerd types that are a little more stream lined. maybe do a google search
Reply:Hi elderthewelder,I thought about that but it only reaches 5 inches.  I would still be left with 2 inches in the middle of the tube that I wouldn't be able to reach.Neil
Reply:I recently used a file to fit 1 1/4 x 1/8 and 1 inch.

Reply:Get a couple of cheap carbide burrs off of ebay and chuck one in a die grinder or even a drill motor.  You can get 6" long burrs there for  a real cheap price. Or a shorter burr on a flex shaft would also do it.If I remember right the ridge that is inside the 2x2 isn't that big. Its just high enough to cause nesting problems.Hobbiest hack
Reply:Thanks to everyone that replied.  The solution that I came up with was to go to my local Lowes and pick up a 12" mill file.  It took about 2 hours to remove the inside weld but it worked fine.  The weld was about 3/16 high.Neil
Reply:just out of curiousity, if you got  2"x2"x1/4" sq tube, that gives you a 1.5" inside dia, how can you put a piece of 1.5"X1.5" tube inside that? I would think the 2"x2" should be 3/16" wall than the 1.5 would slide right in with a 1/16" gap all around
Reply:You can order special square tubing that does not have weld flashing on the inside.  Often if you ask for receiver hitch tubing the steel supplier will know what you are talking about.  It does cost more but the fit is nice.

Reply:FALLON416i used to clean a lot of those at one place i worked.there was always someone making a trailer hitch.i used an air hammer with a short, and then a longchisel. do this from both ends of the tube, and thenuse the band sander. wlbrown
Reply:Just an FYI , most sizes of seamless (pre inside ground) tubing can be purchased at any of the large U-Haul stores. These are the stores that rent thier own stuff only, not a satallite dealer. Thier prices are very reasonable, but you need to order them from the counter as they dont stock the single pieces.
Reply:Try this - take an old file and cut it a tad shorter than the inside width of the tubing.  Grind a cutting edge on it looking a bit like a lathe tool. Weld it square to a length of solid stock, longer than your tubing.  Now grind smooth the inside of your tubing for about 1/2".  Place your homemade cutting tool inside the tubing and stick the whole setup in a hydraulic press - now push the cutting tool all the way down the tubing scraping the weld burr off.  When you get near the end, set your tubing on a couple of plates so the cutter will exit cleanly.  If you need to make several passes, wrap a bit of shim stock around the file opposite the burr end forcing it to cut deeper.  A bit of cutting oil might help too.

Reply:Air-arc works good for short pieces.

Reply:Depending on what you are trying to achieve and how many of these you have to make... it may be easier to groove outside of the inner piece to compensate for the ridge on the inside of the outer piece. - always look for the simple low tech fix -
