want to do somthing special for the wife this valentines day, so I tried my hand at making a rose. I always very critical of my own work, I like to have a plan on what I make so just winging it and making something look random and natural is a stretch for me. tell me what you guys think. any constructive critisim is appreciated. Reply:Great looking Rose for the first time there steeleman! I made my first one from a tutorial on another forum I visit. It turned out pretty much like the one in the tutorial and I studied it for awhile then decided I could make them more realistic. I started looking at a lot of Roses and now almost 2 years into making them I hardly ever have to pitch one in the scrap pile! I'll try to start a new thread and post a few of mine up. Keep up the good work and have fun with it! Reply:hey Questweld i would love to see your work. where did you see the tutorial? I'm not sure about the finish, was thinking metal dye. i have some brass sheet I may try using that to see how it turns out.
Reply:Looks pretty good. If you want a more natural-looking rose, use a real one as a model. Keep one of those little water test tubes on the end so it doesn't go limp too fast. Also, you don't actually have to make the rose up of whole individual petals, you just have to get the outside shell of the overall form right. Reply:steeleman here is the link to the tutorial I started with. http://www.shopfloortalk.com/forums/...ead.php?t=9451It is entertaining and educational! I have used 26ga and up to 18ga on mine and I usually just use heat to get my colors. Heating and then brushing with a brass brush also gives a nice effect. Here is a link about heat and coloring along with one type of finish coat. http://www.ocmulgeeblacksmiths.org/metalcoloring.shtmlI'll post a few pics up as soon as I can. I have one almost ready to clear coat as of now. Reply:Great work, especially for a first try. I cut the pedals for a rose a few weeks ago, but haven't had time to get back to it. Hope mine turns out as good.Check out my channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkz...bZg8AYNXGqBjZQ"Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of arms." - Aristotle

Reply:Think nothin of it steeleman! That kind of info is always worth passing on to a fellow craftsman! So far all I have used is mild steel and stainless. Lot of recycling/upcycling in my shop right now!
