From what I learned so far, the push technique is recommended on thinner materials; has less penetration while perpendicular then pull yields progressively more. What is the typical thickness where you transition away from the push, and does this vary by position?Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 and WP17. 75A AC is for pipe thawing!HH 140 - new addtion 9/2012.I didn't agree, but hoped for Hope and Change.I got change for myself and my family: for the worse. This is the reality of: Barackalypse Now. Again.
Reply:The thickness where "burn through" becomes an issue.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:Hi, it's been 2 years since I last used my Mig welder and I can't remember if I pushed or pulled for any weld.....LOL.......I hate Mig anyway, too many sparks went down my neck.Sometimes you just do it automatically without thinking.Ian.
Reply:There's really no hard-and-fast rule, just whatever works best for the job at hand. Generally it is recommended to push groove welds and drag fillets, but again that's just a general rule. Experience is the best teacher here. Also, whichever direction you run, it's best to keep within 20 degrees or so of vertical. Too much angle will result in poor fusion and lots of spatter.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Ive read in another thread (wisdom in a sentence)    "if theres slag, you drag".   It seems to work for FLUX Core to drag. I guess as you stated for thin materials and MIG, you push.

Reply:Originally Posted by Gerry1964I agree 100%With mig you generally push as you can see more clearly the weld pool and with Flux core you drag to stop the slag contaminating the weld
Reply:I find that visibility is much better pulling, and am generally used to doing so unless I'm running uphill. Maybe it's that I learned stick before I learned MIG. I tend to be able to compensate, and can pull decently on 16ga with .030 wire - I haven't tried anything thinner yet.
Reply:I'll preface this with the fact that I'm not a professional welder, don't claim to be and this is just my theory....But, whether pulling or pushing, penetration is going to be effected more by the other mechanics of the weld than pushing or pulling. I'd think that gun angle matters more than direction of travel. I like to push a mig gun because that's the way I learned to do it and just accepted that as the way to do things, but I'll pull when I need to if the situation dictates it and makes life easier. I also like the visibility of the puddle better when pushing, my welds turn out much better when I can see what the puddle is doing. It seems like with pushing, you'd be heating the metal ahead of the puddle slightly more than if you were pulling the same joint. Might not cause the weld to go deeper, but it should help in flowing out the metal and ensuring fusion.Powcon 400SM2-PD60 wire feedersMiller XR controlAlumapro push/pull gunSpeedglas 9100xBFH
Reply:I thought the main advantage with MIG vs FLUXCORE was to allow welding of thinner metals. The other advantages are no slag and purdy welds when you push.  Does anyone actually pull/drag with TIG?Last edited by Insaneride; 10-01-2012 at 06:09 PM.Reason: grammar
Reply:I have seen Shovelon drag weld with tig.. and he is just as amazing as when he pushes tig.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Yea but Shovelon is an xpert and probably does it in his sleep
Reply:I subscribe to the DRAG the SLAG and PUSH the GAS method but it occurred to me, Southpaw is a lefty. I have trouble with green tin snips, I think they were made for leftys. Hey, its a right handers world but my favorite artist is Leonardi DaVinci (Mona Lisa, Last Supper, Grays Anatomy) and his greatest works were in engineering.Last edited by Insaneride; 10-01-2012 at 11:02 PM.Reason: My heros drag slag

Reply:If you learn to pull no matter what the thickness, you'll never push again, and it will help your other skills with reading weld puddle. Just me tho! I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:So, does anyone pull/drag with TIG and or OA. In my mind, the filler rod would not fuse to the parent metal as good as pushing? Im sure there are situations where pulling has to be done but what about the filler? Another thought, maybee a dumb question but, does anyone push 7018, 6010 or any other SMAW?   Im sticking with "Drag when Slag" and you cant make me change
Reply:I've always pushed TIG, OAW. Never heard of it being pulled, maybe downhill on sheet metal?I've pushed 6010/6011 and 7018 but only uphill.
