i am replacing my cars radiator support and the new one needs to be spot welded. i have never welded before but i am a do it yourselfer so i wanted to rent one out and do it. how would i make spot welds and what should i know. i have been told to get a mig welder what is the difference.thanks
Reply:One way to "spot weld " a bracket with a mig, is to drill a hole in the bracket. Then place it against where you want to weld it to. Fill the hole in. May need to do several welds. In a car most of those spot welds are made with a resistance welder. A Clamp that can pass very high current ( 3000amps or more) and melt the metal together. No arc.Body shops use a spot weld drill bit,to remove the weld and leave a hole that is ready to mig weld for reassembly.Do find a friend to help, or at least teach you the basics of welding. Before you have a car that is full of holes or the radiator falls out when going down the free way.Last edited by ccawgc; 10-05-2012 at 11:27 PM.

Reply:Might wanna grab a couple of pieces of scrap (as close to the same thickness and type as you can find) and mimic the weld you are trying to do. Put the pieces in the same position (Vertical, flat, etc) that the parts in the car are oriented at. This will give you a much better idea than anyone can try to explain on a forum. And if you mess up, it's just scrap. If you've never tried to weld before, you're gonna have a few more questions than how long to hold the trigger after you strike that first arc.Last edited by Snuffy; 10-06-2012 at 03:09 AM.
