I have a 15' bat-wing shredder that has stress cracks.  I am using a Lincoln SA-200 to weld up the cracks, but I have one crack that is in the corner of three flat pieces (x,y,z corner).  I can't get any rotary tool in the corner to clean up the rust and paint.Any suggestions on how to proceed? So far, I have just been using a stainless toothbrush and a piece of flat steel as a scraper.
Reply:If I had to clean in there I'd likely use a drill and a drill bit that looked like the right size.Maybe even a couple different size bits.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Would soda blasting work? I've seen DIY setups with baking soda and air compressors before.
Reply:Needle scaler works good in corners. I would use a 6010 or 6011 with higher amps and burn the crap out of the corner.

Reply:Dremel tool or small die grinder with pointed or flame-shaped abrasive or carbide bit...lotsa "or's" there, sorry.  Works for me.
Reply:All good ideas.  What is a needle scaler?
Reply:Needle scaler.
Reply:Yeah a needle scaler would work great in the corner, they remove slag very well too. The link is harbor freight, it's not necessarily the brand I would recommend but it's cheap for a tester. http://m.harborfreight.com/air-needl...not%20provided
Reply:I'm a fan of Harbor Freight.  Cheap tools good for some jobs.  Don't mind replacing them every couple of years at that price. How long do the needles last?  I checked on Amazon and noticed they were pretty expensive.
Reply:OK, just noticed the Harbor Freight replacement needles at $10.  That's pretty cheap.I think I've made a choice.
Reply:The needles last a long time. Concrete is kind of rough on the needles. They are easy to replace
Reply:Thank you.
Reply:The needle scaler will remove paint and weld slag but it will not remove metal. You need a die grinder with a burr to remove metal from a corner.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Burn it out with a cutting  torch.  Do not heat it to cutting temp.  Just hot enough to burn up the paint and dirt then hit the oxygen in blasts to blow the crap out of the corner.Needle scaler is the first choice if you have one and air.Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:mshearneWithout seeing - I will take a shot . . .I don't know what a 'bat-wing shredder' is - but I want one?If you are using a SA-200 for the fix - I gather your weld issue is steel, relatively thick - and - an interior corner is the flummox.Blasting, carbide-burrs, and needle-guns are for surface issues.OA & Arc-Air only make an interior corner clean-up worse.  Without seeing, the actual condition - this is how I would proceed.Clean the corner 'surface area only' by: blasting, carbide-burr, or needle-gun.Next: break out your Ammo-Can of 'B' drill-bits [sacrificial] andstep drill the corner [hog out] to the depth and width of the porosity.Once you have 'got the devil out' by drilling - a carbide-burr may be practical for beveling the 3 shoulders for easy rod penetration to the root.Go in hot with small/est E6010 - than cap with small/est E7018.Opus
Reply:Everyone has such good ideas.  Sure beats what I was doing.OPUS - a bat wing shredder is one of those large lawn mowers you see the county or state using on the highways.  They are about 15' wide divided into three sections.  The outer two sections have hydraulics on them that allow them to be raised so they can travel down the road. Hence the name 'Bat Wing'.  Most of the outer parts of the shredder is pretty thick stuff, but the decking on it is surprisingly thin.  Also, I'm not a welder, so it doesn't take much for me to blow a hole in something pretty quick.  My rod of choice is 6010/11 1/8" run as low a current as possible and not stick too badly - Usually around 58-60 amps.  I have tried using smaller rods, 3/32 or 1/16, but these just seem to cut through the steel faster, even when turning the current down to what is appropriate.  I picked up a pack of 1/8" 7018 today because there is a section that is straight forward and clean.  The 7018s make for a better looking weld and won't burn so deep.
