I am building a new over cab rack for my welding truck. Most of the structure is 1"x3" rectangular tube 1/8" wall thickness. I welded a 3/16" plate gusset under the overcab section of tube and when it cooled and shrank it pulled the tube downward and out of level. I sorta expected that it was gonna do that. So to counteract what happened I ran two beads of 1/8" jet rod on the top side of the tube and like magic it pulled the tube right back to level. Now here is the part I ain't sure about.Do y'all think I gotta leave the beads on top of the tube to keep it where it's at or will the tube stay where it is now even if I grind the welds down and sand it out like nothing ever happened?I could leave the welds there they are not likely to be seen on top that high up but if I would rather grind them off if I could. I am gonna go take some pics of it and see if I can figure out how to post them, I ain't learned how to do that with this IPad yet but I'll try. I am not the best with computers, I do a lot better with stuff that is hot, sharp, dirty, or loud. The worst thing I can think of happening is if everything I ever welded instantly became UNWELDED
Reply:Grind it off, should be fine. Next time use a torch to heat the steel so you don't have to grind anything off.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Sure grind the welds off. Once they cooled they did their job. I just have to ask, why didn't you use a torch to do the same thing? Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Well I got the pics on there but they got turned 90 degrees somehow, that is not how I took them and that is not how they show up on my IPad so I don't know why they are not turned the right way. Reply:I can't see where it is bent. Box tube and pipe is very reactive to heat. Maybe these drawings will help you in the future. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I thought about heating with a torch but decided to run beads just cuz that was what I used to warp it in the first place. Your right I should have just heated it, or maybe I thought I needed extra practice runnin jet rod?The worst thing I can think of happening is if everything I ever welded instantly became UNWELDED
Reply:A torch, and a spray bottle of water is a powerful tool! I don't like to grind, unless I have to. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
