Hello I operate my own welding business and I am currently working on a job at a school in Southern California. The job is a prevailing wage job and I am employed by the primary fencing contractor on the job as a welder. As I am told they are required to pay me prevailing wages at $46 per hour which i am receiving however after taxes i take home around $27. All equipment I use to complete the work (i.e. welders, grinders, hand tools, etc.) I own myself however I do not know if I am supposed to be receiving an additional hourly rate for the use of my equipment . Can anyone answer that for me?
Reply:I don't know what you "should" be making, but 27 bucks an hour after taxes is decent enough, I wouldn't b!tch either way.
Reply:Cost of living is high in SoCal. The last time I looked into prevaling in Central Cali was $65/hr metal framing. I think iron workers and weldors made more. If your supplying welding rod and xpendables then you should be reimbursed or get them to buy rod and consumables. I think they should be supplying the welder and gases also.
Reply:Your getting screwed if your supplying welder and tools and consumables
Reply:I can give you a perfect example of the cost differences between CA and other states. Ex and I moved from Colorado where we had shared auto insurance. We own the exact same year and model car. Called ins to change to new separate policies. Talked to same agent (progressive ins) in same phone call. Similar coverages. My ins for 6 months in NV was just over $200. My Ex for living in Los Angeles was just over $1000. 5 times more expensive for auto ins in CA. So I am sure it carries over to business insurance too...Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:In all fairness, if they cannot provide welding equipment themselves, then find out how much a rental would run them, then id reduce the cost by 20%, gives you a few in the pocket without running the hours up on your welder "unpaid" This rental cost can also help offset the consumeables cost, if it already isnt provided
Reply:Forgive me if im wrong, but 46 gross and after taxes, 27? Do they have you on the books as a sub-contractor? My friend works out here in glass install, and his "skilled" prevailing wage (top tier) is roughly 40 bucks, and he takes home about 30-35 depending on hours worked. I think something is up with that pay, but maybe its the difference in locations.
Reply:Prevailing wage is the base pay for your trade. In other words, what anyone who shows up to work gets. You should be negotiating on top of that for your machines. And consumables should be compensated (or replaced). That's if you're just a worker, getting paid hourly by them. If you're a sub contractor then that changes things.IW Local 580 NY, NY
Reply:Thank you all for your replies, I believe should probably negotiate a equipment use rate
Reply:Negotiate ie: pay me way more or I'm dragging up I doubt your making any money once you figure the cost of your equipment |
