Hi guys, first off I want to thank ya all in helping recommend what machine to buy a few years ago.I bought a used Lincoln Square wave 255 with a miller coolmate 3 cooler, the welder did not come with a foot peddle so I found one on ebay and have been welding away in my home garage for a couple years now. With many hours of reading tips from ya all and practicing I have been very happy with all the results!!!!!! Kuddos to the folks of the WWOn to my question, last week I got to use the new Miller 250 syncrowave at work to weld up some aluminium and was shocked how easy it was to control the heat with the peddle, it was nothing like mine?Could it be that the miller is just that much better at controlling the voltage? After playing with mine a bit more it almost seems I have no voltage control, I cant even hear a difference in the arc like I can on the Miller?I guess since its all I ever worked with I just made it work and thought thats the way it is?Is there a way to test this peddle with a basic volt meter, or do I need to take it in to my LWS?TIASrLincoln Squarewave 255Miller Coolmate IIISpeedway 320Lots of melted mess so far
Reply:Form a puddle on steel and see if you can back the amperage off so it doesn't leave a crater. If you have been using it without trouble I would bet it works. Some machines have pedals that operate better than others (to me anyway). The pedal for my Airco always seems to have a bit of lag, from when I move the pedal to when I notice the arc change.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:They can be checked with an ohmmeter, you can look for a smooth change in resistance.    Most of them have three pins for the variable resistor, one for each end and one for the variable tap.  It is a possibility that the variable resistor is not working well anymore, kind of like a scratchy volume control on an old radio.  The suggestion of forming a puddle on steel and then backing off the amperage sounds good.Sculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:Well guys I have to say I am extremely embarrassed to report…… It was a setting I messed up with I guess my only defence was/am as a total newbie I didnt know how it was supposed to work until I used a welder that it did work on.I took the peddle into my LWS and it tested ok so I started playing with the welder some more this afternoon and noticed a switch to set current control to either local or remote? Not sure why I had it set to local but I know I have never played with it, so I switch it to remote and bingo I got a new welder……..unbelievable?I wasnt sure if I would even report this on a public forum but what the hell, were all entitled to one I guess LOLInterestingly enough i have been able to do some pretty nice work up till now with out being able to control the current with the peddle other than off and on.Anyways I am pretty elated that its all working and appreciate all the help from ya all.SRLincoln Squarewave 255Miller Coolmate IIISpeedway 320Lots of melted mess so far
