I picked up a Delta 17-968 drill press on Friday. Bought it at Western Tools for a heckuva price. Its pretty sweet, has full variable speed from 200rpm to 2500rpm, 5/8 chuck, 3/4hp and a nice work light. I put it in the shop this weekend on a long wall. Nice chuck action and real smooth vibration free operation. Man, I've been wanting a nice DP for a long time.snoboy
Reply:Having a drill press will grow on you pretty quick. We can argue brands, quality or price all day but any is by far better than none. You did good. You'll love it. Just be carefull. Those things can teach some pretty harsh lessons. Get a small drill press vise, build or by some clamps of various styles and use them. Have fun.
Reply:Yeah, especially when drilling metal CLAMP or SECURE the workpiece securely before drilling.Trust me, you can NOT hand-hold a piece of stock when (notice I said when and not if) the bit catches and there is 1/2 or 3/4 HP of electric motor driving the bit.Well Sandy, I'd say -almost- any drillpress is better than none. A few are so bad they are worse than none. The Delta shouldn't be in that category though.

Reply:I think Delta makes some really decent stuff. I got a Delta table saw that works like a champ too!
Reply:Finally got the drill press mounted to the floor and drilled some holes. Boy is this thing smooth. I sure like the variable speed.
Reply:DELTA is one tool company whose products over the years I have bought and NEVER returned.I have a full production wood working shop and there are a few brands whose tools I will buy without question, and though Delta is not my favorite, they are up there.Delta Unisaw ROCKS for woodworkingI guess my favorites ( at least with wood ) Porter Cable, Delta , DeWalt. At least with Delta I know there are many aftermarket accessories. My Drill Press is one of those large Craftsman ones, but it has a lot of Delta accessories on it! |
