Welding School?

Hi Welding, Im currently trying to decide which welding school is better…Hobart, Miller or Tulsa. My goal is to join the boilermakers. Also, are trade schools a good idea or a waste of time for this type of job. Thanks.

Reply:I never went to a trade school when I was younger, I got a job in a fab shop when I was 16 and I managed to land that job for two reasons. One, I was standing there when the owner was in a jam and needed help, and two, I agreed work for $4 an hour in cash.However, after I had worked as a welder for ten years or so I took the API 1104 code 6G downhill pipe class at Lincoln Electric. It is a three week course. The biggest reason I took that class was because I really wanted to get a massive amount of time under my hood welding downhill pipe. Consider this, at the Lincoln school in Cleveland, Ohio they have a dumpster full of 6" pipe already cut 4" long and pre beveled on a large lathe. In taking the class I was allowed to use up all the pre beveled pipe and rods that I could use as long as I was welding them all the way out, doing my best, and not wasting material. I welded every bevel clear full and burned every rod down to a stub. There were about four other people taking that class at the time when I did and I think that I burned through more pipe and rods than all the other four people combined. I was not there for social hour, I was welding pipe.This is worth thinking about if you really want to get some practice, especially if you want to practice on pipe. If I had went out and bought that much pipe, and rods, and grinding wheels, and took the amount of time required to bevel the pipe and prep it for welding I would have never had time to cram that much welding in a three week period and I probably would have spent more money than I paid for the class.The worst thing I can think of happening is if everything I ever welded instantly became UNWELDED
