This might sound like a useless question but here goes. I came across a deal on some electrodes that say 7010 - P1 on them. The rods burn really good and I have been researching them. All the specs say good from "XXX to XXX steel" or good "up to XXX steel". What about weldable steel that I buy at a steel supply house?   Also I would gather that they would be good for welding on an auxiliary axle on a tri axle dump truck since it's alloy steel, wouldn't it! I have been using a 6011 root and 7018 filler on reinforcing the broken axle a but I would like to use these rod the next time it has fatigue cracks because it probably will. I told the owner that it needed to be replaced but he wants me to weld it anyhow. And he pays good! And I have insurance to cover any liability issues before anyone asks. Some people buy a boat for retirement. Reply:I'm not an expert, but wouldn't 7010 be just like 6010, with the exception that 7010 has 10,000 psi greater tensile strength over 6010?  I think it would be fine for anything you'd want to weld 6010/6011 with.  However for something that is going to flex versus being always stationary and idol (like a trailer tongue),  the 7018 still beats any 6010/7010.  When compared to 6010/7010, the 7018 is much more ductile and "gives" more to torsion and flexing before a stress fracture occurs.Last edited by SuperArc; 08-22-2014 at 06:23 PM.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:SuperArc you echoed my thoughts almost exactly. I was thinking on the truck axle that maybe I would run my root pass with the 7010 instead of 6011 and fill with 7018. The axle seems rigid but I worked in a plant that manufactured similar axles and realize that they have to flex, even if the deflection not visible to the naked eye. I had to reinforce said axle the last time and when it cracked again, my reinforcing plates were what held it together until he could get it back to the shop. I'm just trying to save this customer money as they are awful good to a small semi retired guy like me. They have their own welder on the payroll but had rather use me because I can be there within 15 minutes and their welder stays 100 mile away at another plant.      I don't have a rod oven but I keep my 7018 sealed in plastic after I break open the original and just have enough out to use before this high humidity in this area gets to them. Thanks for the reply. Some people buy a boat for retirement.
