First time to ever weld and I have a flux core wire welder. It came with .35 wire. My question is what kind of metal can I weld? I want to make metal letters, wine racks, etc.,  for my boutique! I have experience using metal in sign building, but not in welding. Thanks guys!!
Reply:Steel would be the metal of choice for the FC wire.
Reply:What kind of machine did you get?If its a better DC machine make sure the polarity is correct for flux core wire.I have seen flux core only machines come from the factory with the power leads backwards for flux core, aka hooked up for solid wire.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:I just got a cheap one from Northern Tools! I picked it because it was small and I can plug it in with out getting new electric in the garage! I thought that I would be able to use it to make old timey looking letters out of sheet metal... just put the dots of weld, not like the lines of it! I have someone coming this weekend to show me how to use it, but after reading all these forum posts, I think I got the wrong kind of welder! I guess it a girl thing, but I really only want to do crafts with it!!!
Reply:Depending on machine you may be able to add gas and do mig as well.  Mig is much cleaner for the work you are describing.  It will also let you work on thinner material than flux core.Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Reply:Originally Posted by karieadolpI think you should use steel becaue I'd more oftenly used for making metal letters. There is no problem of rust as it is protected by a coat of paint.
