i have to weld a sump onto a brand new gas tank(never used) and we plased the aftermarket sump and bent the sheet metal to reduce the gap significantly. the gas tank was fabricated with about 20g steel and the sump like 18g steel. my question is, should i tig this without filler? or can i tig this with .045 filler?
Reply:I say use filler. I think 0.045" diameter wire will work OK. You could try to fuse this, but the weld joint will be stronger with filler. Plus, if you have any gaps, or if the sheet metal warps during welding and you loose your perfect fitup, you'll need some filler metal to add to the puddle to bridge any gaps.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector |
