I'm getting the hang of doing flat welds with the TIG and aluminum. But not so good with the fillets.  I think I need a fair bit more power. How many amps should I am for to do a fillet on 3mm thick ally (1/8")?Should I change my freq. higher for an insider corner or can you leave it the same as a flat but weld?
Reply:There's a tig calculator on the Miller website you should look into.  Turning up the AC frequency is supposed to help focus the arc into the joint and help it from dancing around between the pieces-I don't really find it makes much difference in real life.I'm assuming you're using a foot pedal....Use the standard 1 amp per thousandth plus 25 for Aluminum.  That's what I use.  You want the metal to melt hot and fast in the beginning to lessen the total heat input and insure penetration at the start.  Once you get the first dab in to connect the parts, it's a piece of cake to keep it going.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Yeah what you just said make so much sense.  I have found if it is not hot enough it just eventually goes to ****.  Once you get it started it is easy to keep dabbing and moving.  I will  check out the calculator again.
Reply:The 1 amp per .001 rule is a good starting point, but with alum you need a bit of extra power right at the start to get the puddle going fast. for 1/8" I usually suggest at least 150 amps for students, and I'll usually set the machine a bit higher myself. You mash the pedal getting full amps for just a brief second to get the puddle going, then immediately back down and continue to keep adjusting lower to compensate for the heat building up in the material..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Unless u r in Canada,  appearantly they only teach u to use 100amps up north:what::what::thumbdown:Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:As a rule of thumb I generally run 130 amps for most 1/4 in.  or thinner applications....If you need less let up on the pedal.....if you need more than what 130 amps offers dial in more......3/32 tungsten will work for most jobs unless your going over 200 amps......AC or DC  tungsten choice for  whatever metal being welded of course..The inverters use Cereated for both......  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
