New Way To Measure Stuff..

Went to drop off some parts I had made at this big corporation yesterday.. Got to chatting with the head Engineer there (he actually knows his stuff..we're good friends..) and he showed me a "new" way to measure "stuff" somewhat accuratly without a scale or tape measure..Check it out..put your thumb down on a table nail up and measure across your thumb..about 1" Right?Put your fingers together and measure from your pinkey to your "point" finger..about 3" Right?Measure from your pinkey to the crease where your thumb and palm meet..about 4" Right?Put your hand down on a table and streach out your pinkey and thumb and measure across..about 10" right...we could get into "other" areas to measure..but this is a family show..so we'll keep it clean..i was amazed and you will be too.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Leonardo DeVinci did alot of this. During his time there was no standard for measurements. So he determined relative measures based on the human male. Very interesting. According to Leonardo's notes in the accompanying text, written in mirror writing, it was made as a study of the proportions of the (male) human body as described in a treatise by the Ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, who wrote that in the human body:a palm is the width of four fingers a foot is the width of four palms a cubit is the width of six palms a man's height is four cubits (and thus 24 palms) a pace is four cubits the length of a man's outspread arms is equal to his height the distance from the hairline to the bottom of the chin is one-tenth of a man's height the distance from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin is one-eighth of a man's height the maximum width of the shoulders is a quarter of a man's height the distance from the elbow to the tip of the hand is one-fifth of a man's height the distance from the elbow to the armpit is one-eighth of a man's height the length of the hand is one-tenth of a man's height the distance from the bottom of the chin to the nose is one-third of the length of the head the distance from the hairline to the eyebrows is one-third of the length of the face the length of the ear is one-third of the length of the face Leonardo is clearly illustrating Vitruvius De Architectura 3.1.3 which reads:The navel is naturally placed in the centre of the human body, and, if in a man lying with his face upward, and his hands and feet extended, from his navel as the centre, a circle be described, it will touch his fingers and toes. It is not alone by a circle, that the human body is thus circumscribed, as may be seen by placing it within a square. For measuring from the feet to the crown of the head, and then across the arms fully extended, we find the latter measure equal to the former; so that lines at right angles to each other, enclosing the figure, will form a square.Grant

Reply:No No ..... I'm not trying to "One Up" you. I just find this kind of thing facinating. We, meaning modern men, are very quick to forget how we got here. We came from people who were required by life itself to be self relient. To be able to calculate and measure using only what was available and to do it to such percision is mind boggling.Consider this: Imagine Building a house without a tape measure, without a square, Now consider building it without a modern hand saw, now without nails, etc...... Many of the things, Though very refined today we owe to inventors like leanardo de Vinci, his contemporaries and those before them. Didn't mean to hijack the thread Zap. Reply:I use the outstretched arm trick all the time for measuring things like rope and cable. I'm right at 6' tall, by pulling the rope through my hand and strecthing my arms out, I can measure a length of rope pretty accurately.

Reply:although its been a wile , in school in art class its one of the first things you are told befor starting the body, been a wile but if memery serves me corectly wimen have a diferent scal than men on the head to over all , more like 8to1 and babbies was like 4 or 6 to 1 , like i asid its been a wile but i would think its still a standerd to lern in art classes, after all i think we can all agre Leonardo DeVinci did a good job of getting the drawings right and to scale, but then again he did spend a lot of time practising. guess its like TIG ya gotta put the time in to get it right, then every one wants to coppie you. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
