New to the forum. This summer I took an intro to welding class as CE at a local college and am now hooked. I have purchased a Miller Thunderbolt XL as well as a Tweco Mig machine. On Craigslist today a seller has a AEAD that is at a really low price. His description says that it starts and produces electricity but will not weld. He says he thinks that it is a diode. Anyone know these welders and is a diode going out common ? Also could it be something a lot more serious that would make this a scrap unit ? The little Thunderbolt works fine but I need to be able to do work/play in the back yard. Thanks All
Reply:Several things come immediately to mind as possible. It could be as simple as the weld/power switch being bad or a bad connection. There's actually a good number of things that could cause this all the way up to burnt out windings. Reply:These older miller gas portable welders were noisy. I have one. Your thunderbolt with longer cables on it might be less headache for you and will be much quieter. The gas engine drive machines produce a much smoother weld arc though.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:100 ft will not be a problem as long as they are large enough.  An extension cord would work as well.   I came across some #4 welding cable many yrs ago, so made 50' extensions for my T-bolt.  I doubled the cable as I had lots.   And just recently, I came into an extension cord with #4 conductors.  Only 36 feet long, but the price was right!Tim
