I need Ideas & photos for repurposing an 80 gallon gas hot water heater please. --Yesterday as I’m taking out the garbage…. I see my neighbors have a hot water heater out at the curb.  Their house is only 11 years old so it had to be newer….. I wanted it…. couldn’t rationalize taking it because I didn’t know what I wanted it for but…. still wanted it.  So I go inside and make a few calls to friends to see if anyone has ever repurposed a gas hot water heater before…. nope… nobody has. I send an e-mail to the man teaching me how to weld thinking he might be online checking e-mail and he’s not….. and I can see the garbage truck coming…. uh oh…. decisions decisions… to snitch it or…. not.  Grabbed my wheel barrow and couldn’t get it in…. too heavy. Ran back and grabbed a dolly from the basement, got it on with the help of my wonderful garbage man, rolled it across the street over to my house and up the driveway knowing full well my better half wouldn’t be happy when he came home and saw it. He wasn’t happy…. 1st word out of his mouth was, “Seriously.” Next words were, “Take it back to where ever you found it…. it’s not a lost puppy.”  --  --So here I sit with my latest “treasure”…. an 80 gallon gas hot water heater that I’ve read can be set up next to existing hot water tanks to be used as storage (seems a lot of people hide “stuff” in them), can be converted into a pig trough (don’t have any pigs), and can be plumbed inline with water lines and used for back up water storage, “Put shut offs on top and bottom and a fawcet for gravity drain when there is no power. Plumbed inline will keep fresh water in it.”  We have Schutz tanks for storing fresh water for the gardens so that’s a no go. --I’ve found a few ideas online but…. so far nothing I can use. Here’s a thread from here on a BBQ and yard cooker from a water heater, http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ter-heater-BBQ. Problem is we have a grill. --Water tank to outdoor wood heater conversion, http://www.instructables.com/id/Phas...Outdoor-Wood-/. Cool idea but…. why heat the outside?--Water tank to wood burning stove conversion, http://www.instructables.com/id/Conv...tove/?ALLSTEPS. Another cool idea but…. we already have a wood burning stove we don’t use. --And look…. I could even make my own biodiesel fuel with it, http://www.officialbiodiesel.com/fre.../appleseed.htm. Really cool idea.... too bad we don’t have any diesel vehicles. --Does anyone have any ideas or photos of a repurposed  “treasure” like this? About all I'm coming up with to avoid having to send my “puppy” to a scrap yard  is cutting it down, welding a base for it, then using it as a chicken de-feathering tank similar to this, http://thedeliberateagrarian.blogspo...-my-never.html.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:You said you have a "grill". Do you have a "smoker"? That tank is a prime candidate to become a smoker. I prefer old propane tanks but gas water heater are thick enough too.One of these days I'm going to get started on my smallish smoker build from a 150 gallon propane tank I traded for an old air compressor.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:I would ask neighbor if it works. They may have replaced for a larger size. It appears you did not get the diverter flue that goes on top.  If it did function properly, it could still be useful as a water heater.

Reply:Fence post "cooker", if you live in a rural area. Use it for treating/re-treating fence posts before setting them in the ground. Mostly RR ties. 100 gal tank, top cut off. Tank sits on a couple of steel beams with enough space underneath for a propane burner. 30-40 gallons of used motor oil, plus occasionally add a gallon or two of Termin-8. Fits 3-4 RR ties, heated (carefully...) for a couple of hours until really hot then allowed to cool. Usually just leave them soaking in the barrel until I need them. They last a lot longer than regular ties, even good ones.Hobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?

Reply:My better half has an answer to FORTEALLOY’s signature line, “Hobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?” He says, “When a hobbyist hauls home junk like a water heater.”--lotechman> that sounds an awful lot like a still. --FORTEALLOY>  Here’s the Termin-8 I was thinking of, http://www.meatandpoultryonline.com/...servative-0001. The active ingredient found in the Termin-8 product that you used was an organochlorine compound. I would imagine that would work as a wood “pickler” and a people “pickler” too.  Are there any stands of Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) growing anywhere around you? This might be of interest to you, http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-.../black-locust/. This too, http://www.woodweb.com/knowledge_bas...cust_uses.html. There is no better product for landscape timbers in my opinion. In the ground… Black Locust timbers can last 40…. even 50 years or longer…. untreated. It’s what our great grandparents used for posts before Big Chem came along. --gxbxc>  “Ok I stand corrected ,I bow my head too you, an old hot water heater does have some value” Not so fast.... better lift your head up…..  I pulled some info off the label on the water heater last night. It’s a Rheemglas Fury model 4N80. Remember back a few posts ago when you made these comments, “some are porcelain coated they chip all to hell, can't cut the or weld them. my advise… put back for the trash man.”  Turns out you’re right. The model I hauled home has an “exclusive” patented Rheemglas tank lining that Rheem advertised would resist corrosion which would prolong the tank life…. it’s got a porcelain enamel interior.  Here’s some spot-on comments I found online regarding Rheem’s “exclusive” patented tank linings, “In the past 15 years they have been lining the tanks with a ceramic coating so the tank would last longer. They used lighter gauge steel and the tanks usually rust and leak at the threaded heater element areas or the water inlet and outlet areas.” And that is EXACTLY what happened to my neighbor’s water heater…. It rusted and started leaking at the threaded heater element area AND started rusting by both the water inlet and outlet areas. Great product Rheem's got- not.  It lasted all of 11 years… so much for Rheem’s “Exclusive Rheemglas ™ Porcelain Enamel Tank Lining engineered for durability and long tank life.”  I can’t even use it for a smoker because of the enamel…. all it’s good for is a pig feed trough. --“But the guy in the video need a better latch and handle system,” I saw that. I found a similar build that addressed those issues….  all one would need is an older hot water heater without a “new & improved” porcelain enameled lining. Check out the photos of this vertical smoker build, https://www.flickr.com/photos/dodson...7629200965356/.--G-son> earlier on you posted this, “Doesn't every metal worker need a good high temperature oven, or forge...?” I did some poking around online and found this idea for others who have a solid metal hot water heater tank…. it’s a medium duty furnace for metal casting, http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/harriette01.html --'Stang> So much can be done with heavy gauge all-metal hot water heaters…. too bad that’s NOT what I hauled up the driveway to play with.  Hi ho, Hi ho…. it’s back to the curb it goes. --The covers to A/C units are also great for covering up plywood that’s been used for shelving or to support a tool like a bench grinder. Hmmm…. maybe I’ll strip the water heater of its outer metal cover and use it to cover a plywood shelf .... maybe not... maybe it's just better to go out and move it back to the curb under the cloak of darkness. Reply:I could but.... my husband was so "touched" that I was willing to part with my beloved "leaker" that he told me he'd try picking up a residential steel well tank for me. I keep very little in the freezer.... most everything goes into little glass jars these days and... we bought another big momma generator that's got enough oomph to run our well pump. We've got enough gas on hand that we rotate out to be able to run it every few days for a few months and.... we've got a wood burning stove to keep the house above freezing so our pipes won't burst and at least 10 cords of wood stacked up outside. Going without power for 8 days was a real wake up call. --Canadian Welding> I've heard of those engine drive welders. Think I could get hubby to flip for one of them.... Reply:Bigwood logger> Yes, we have an outdoor fireplace and two indoor fireplaces. The outdoor pit is too far away from our house and the indoor fireplaces aren't efficient. They suck too much heat out.... no point upgrading them to woodburning units when it's doubtful we'll be in this house 10 years from now. The wood burning stove is much more efficient. We also have a propane BBQ and 5 extra tanks of propane so we'll be able to cook food the next time we're stuck without electricity. Why do you ask? I gave it away to somebody who goes to scrap yards every once in a while and told him not to spend the $$$ he made off of it all at one fast food restaurant. They're only paying .08¢ for steel around here. At those prices.... he won't even be able to pay for gas half way to the scrap yard.
