Had a job come in that called for line boring so I took a few shots while I was doing it.  The first three shots show the problem areas. The next two show the boring bar setup after making a few light cuts.   More pics coming. Reply:Next set of pics  The first pics is another view of the lineboring setup. The second is the finished bore. The third is after making a bushing to go in the hole out of 4140. The fourth shows the complete assembly.   I made all my pieces out of 4140 or equivalent. Lot of machine time on this one. Not much welding. Reply:I've always wondered how a guy gets the set-up correct?  Like in do you get the boring bar somewhat close, then bore & sleeve?  Do you index the bore from the "good bore" & then adjust the rear cutter accordingly?  Or is there more to it I'm not seeing?MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:Nice repair. Thanks for the photos.
Reply:Do you finish the bushing with the line bore?  Or is the bushing machined for fit then just weld in straight enough
Reply:Looks good, I need to do the main pin in a lowbed trailer soon.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:I always wondered how these were indexed.  CoolWithout your tooling I'd probably have to go another route.  Would imagine I'd make another ear, machine the bore, then try to align it and weld it onto the bucket.  Lot of room for mistakes possible my way I'd imagine.  Probably use the old pin, or a dummie pin for alignment, then weld away. There'd be a lot of nervousness bordering on panic "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I see you have things well in hand Irish. There's really no telling if things were bored wrong from the get-go or it suffered some adjustments while in operation. Never the less some setups go good and others I seem to get every piece of junk I own out before things are running. Now! I'm looking at that radial drill you have behind the part & thinking it would be a nice place for a french drain next to it so I could use it for a bar drive with the bar down the hole.... That is If I were getting many of those things. The bucket looks good to go now.Matt

Reply:Originally Posted by irish fixit  I seriously considered the drill for this job. I could of done it fairly easily. If it was in better shape I would of just mounted the bucket on the table and bored the hole with a boring head. But the spindle on that drill has to much slop to do a good job boring. Thus I would of needed my bearings to guide the bar anyway so it was just as simple to do it in the middle of the floor.

Reply:Originally Posted by Matt_MaguireI was thinking of using it to pull the line boring bar up, same setup as you have except the drive is the radial drill. When I used to get out & about many of the shops that had radial drills had a pit behind it with a cover so they could drop long things in them for drilling or pull a boring bar without the aggravation of owning an HBM and having to put up with the prissy hands that knew how to run them (or thought they knew how anyway).Just a thought...Matt
