Here is a gate at our little farm that has been broken for a while. Ive finally gotten around to doin somethin about it.My portable welder is out at my dads place so i had to take it off and bring it to the shop. I couldnt get to the one side to undo the nuts due to many fence pannels leaning in the way so i went to the other side and knocked out a wire in the no-climb wire fencing to get a decent swing with the wrench. I dont think anyone will notice lol.  I took the  ready rod from the hinge out to my dads shop and got to use my new plasma and tig to fix it. Reply:Well those pictures are great, but if you already fixed it where are those pictures?
Reply:I took a larger diameter pipe cause thats all i had ( 2"id), cut it in half and then cut a good half inch out of it. I clamped it in the vice inside of a piece of angle iron to do this to get the nicest cut possible. Nice square straight edge. Then I squashed it in the vice till it was smaller than the 1 7/8 I it needed to be and then fitted it onto a piece of shaft the right size and in a couple quick hits i had the right size i needed.  I decided to tig weld the ready rod to the pipe since I dont have alot of steel practice with the tig. All my tig experince is aluminium, and lots of it! Took the pics with my cellphone, so the close ups are not good, but some pics are better than no pics. Reply:I would agree looks good.Good thinking with using the pipe and cutting it.  Seems it makes it easier in this case.
Reply:Allrighty. After work today I came home and finished the repair. Clamp, tack, weld. I used ol' blue, my old buzz box I brought with me when I moved to my gfs. Some 3/32 7018 ac running on the cold side. The one bead was ugly but I posted it anyways cause it showed a nice shot of the tig weld. Attached ImagesNothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.

Reply:Posted just in time, I need to replace my gates too.  Some ding-dong prior to me buying the house used steet deck screws in close proximity to the ocean...  I end up going out every couple of months covering up the rust streaks with more paint.  Replacement is the only option - and I will definately use your idea - stainless screes on the wood slats and and stainless all thread on the hinges.  Thank you!!RocketmanRay
Reply:Nice, simple, effective repair. I like the way you use the long threaded rod so you can adjust the angle on the gate.  I didn't notice, but a large galv. washer or plate between the nut and fence post on the back side like your gate side would keep it from digging into the wood.
