A couple of days I was asked by a friend to build a coffin gas tank for his mini bike. My question is does anyone know what thickness will work for this job ?Will Supports Autism Awareness My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:For a mini bike? Most small engine gas tanks are thiiiiin stuff. 18 gauge at the most. There's nothing saying you can't go thicker, but I can't think of any reason to go heavier than a 14 gauge. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:Having a problem tigging the thin gauge metal, does anyone have some tips to make it a little easier ? And could the mill scale on the backside of the weld joint cause an issue ?Thanks in advance WillWill Supports Autism Awareness My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:Outside corners I sometimes like not using any filler, or if I use any not much. Some people like Silicon Bronze for thin stuff, it melts a little cooler so you're less likely to blow holes in stuff. What thickness are you using, and what problems are you having?

Reply:What do you have current set to? What size/type tungsten?
Reply:3/32 tungsten and my machine has no way to limit the max amperage. Will Supports Autism Awareness My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:Gotta throw some 1/16 tungsten in there... And you can't set max amps on your tig? That's friggin stupid. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:You sould try making some shim stops for your pedal out of some aluminum stock or something. Calibrate the thickness to a certain amp setting on the pedal. You still won't have the same control as if you could set max amps, because the range of motion is reduced, however it would keep you from stomping the pedal to the floor and blowing holes real easily. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:Hmmmmmmmmm Stainless is no joke, you don't have any stainless experienceand that tank is doomed.......I wouldn't use stainless......to much movement (Warp) and you need to purge the inside with Argon or you will have Sugaring.....Not a good Idea......Use aluminum, much easier to form and the Warp factor will be minimal. That's what I would use... Reply:Yeah BC I think you are right on the stainless I can hear it warping while I Attempt to weld it. I think I will stick with the easier metals for now. Will Supports Autism Awareness My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .
Reply:I would use 18g...use 1/16 tungsten, .030/ .035 filler if you need to, I would fuse them and have the filler ready if you need it, try to weld each seem straight through or at least half way or more...the less starts/stops the less warpage...bend (brake) as much as you can then weld...Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:OK the reason I suggested 3/32 Aluminum for you coffin tank is its easy to weld, stays straight AND being a motorcycle guy and Mini bike Builder that tank will be so strong you could crash on it and not kill it like the thin sheet metal......54 years ago, my first mini bikeTwo months ago my 58 bike with me riding it 9.82--135Last edited by B_C; 10-10-2012 at 11:36 PM. Reply:It seems like mini bikes are popular again, People building drag mini bikes and stuff. People have seen the ones that I built and have restored and asking if I can build certain things for them. So i'm cashing in on it while its hot, making things for them and minor frame repairs and such.Last edited by Steelwill; 10-11-2012 at 07:04 AM.Will Supports Autism Awareness My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .

Reply:Well I didnt like how that one ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ up there turned out so I started over, Made it a little bigger and refined my process. I'm learning that fit up means a lot, so I worked on my cutting methods. so Here's what I have now. All tacked up.Welded up Close up of the beads.More to come.Last edited by Steelwill; 11-07-2012 at 08:06 AM.Will Supports Autism Awareness My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month .

Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeUse POR-15 gas tank sealer. Nice job by the way, but you should never have put water in it not the end of the world tho. I always use kerosene, this way in case theres a leak you don't have to go crazy cleaning it out without having a gas tank as a new face The POR is GREAT stuff, I recomend it all the time, it's just time consuming, and read the directions well and you'll be a customer for life!
Reply:Well if have someone else intrested in a tank, so I fab up a few more. I tried some cold rolled sheet this time. Some weld shots 16ga 1/16 2% thoriated tungston at around 70 amps. This has been some good Tig practice. Will Supports Autism Awareness My ToysBobCat 225 PLusMillermatic 130Miller Spectrum 300 CutmateEverlast Power Tig 185 Micro April is Autism Month . |
