Of all places I would learn about this was the bank while getting a new account.  The lady helping me out is a former/part time steam power generation welder. Learned a few things about it while I was there I became intrigued by it then I also found out a local traveling millwright company based around here is in need of help I am not certified but would like to get my foot in the door and see if this I want to do.  I am going for mobile equipment and some welding certs right now d1.1, d1.5 stick(6010, 7018 and one other I forgot), mig, flux for 1" unlimited pass and intro to tig just the basics not sure about any certs.  The instructor is starting a aerospace tig program soon which I am interested in along with the other stuff I will do my cdl for a class A.I know with aging power generation plants and new ones being built I really enjoy the power system aspect and I may call them tomorrow to see if I can get a shop helper job.  I have to do a internship for my degree over the summer and maybe that will qualify.   Does any one do this type of work or similar also  I am curious about should I get more certs or different ones to make myself more marketable, Should I mention I go to the college I go to and for what and what I would like to do etc.? and I am curious about the rigs and set-ups you run.
Reply:I went through a Millwright apprenticeship. Two things you need to learn right now!1 how to hold a coffee cup in one hand.2 how to play pocket pool with the other hand.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:The only exciting part of Millwright work is conveyors! The precision work is so boring. Over the years I got to install some really interesting conveyor systems.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Being a hall rat is fun for awhile. Miss a month or two of work, and you might as well be working in a grocery store. Unless you hit shut down after shut down, then you can bank some $$$$$. The real money is when you get on with a company, and you go from job to job, or back to the yard, but never back to the hall!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Try to find a contractor who has millwrights. You may not get to go from job to job but the prospects for full time employment are probably better
Reply:I am a Certified Millwright and I worked for a fab shop for years.  Some days you stayed in the shop and built new stuff other days you put new shafts in big rollers.  I was sent out on a emergency job at a pulp / paper mill and was on the job for 36hrs straight.  It is not an easy life but it is rewarding and the money is decent. If you can land a job as helper that's good, round here if the shop wants you to be certified they pay for the inspectors to come into the shop and pay for it.  Learning the basics of welding will definitely help get you in the door.Measure with a micrometre, mark with chalk,  cut with a torch.Never force anything...just get a bigger hammer.RoyOld Airco buzz box approx 1974Lincoln mig pack 15Lincoln 175 square wave1954 9" south bend lathe
Reply:At the moment I am only available Thursday-Saturday because of classes that seems to be the one thing that might hold them up and olcarguy and firemanmike you maybe familiar with the outfit nordic they are a local contractor that has them and one other I completely forgot the name of both based in Northern NH but I guess they do stuff everywhere.  Being a prospect is better than nothing and do you run the typical rig dually with a welder, plasma, suitcase, hand tools, some electric tools and a air comp just as the basics?
Reply:Westinghouse has a crew of travling millwrights , they go from plant to plant , they usually hire some local to fill out the roster . But then they go to unemoloyment offices and offer big money for 4 weeks work as a spoonge or slug . usually two weeks clearance and training  a few days hot work  then their  done for a year .
