I had these two projects come in today... A brand new air compressor for a Detroit 60 series... $ 700... the "mechanic" said he tripped and dropped it on the floor...yeah right...I have suspicion he tried to pull it on with the bolts and something wasn't lined up... not sure about the aluminum part but got broken as well... of course somebody decided to use JB weld Any way I was successful repairing both parts.... I used 1/16th 308 SS,3/32 thoriated, #8 gas lense, not sure about amps using the peddlebut had it set around 200, little bit of preheat before welding on the compressor housing....I used 3/32 4043 rod, 1/8 thoriated ,#8 gas lense, amps were set at 250 but I preheated it first so I doubt I used more than 180 or so on the aluminum part... Reply:I didn't mess with the groove for the O-ring, the owner said he would make his own gaskets for it...Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:not bad how do you plan on repairing the groove in the aluminum casting?1979 sa 200victor 100several bfh's several pitbulls (for holding down the floor)
Reply:I told the customer that re-grooving would be really difficult, he said not to worry about it that he would figure something out, my guess is he'll probably just use some paper gasket material... he wanted to have everything done by late afternoon so the truck could go back out asap...Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:Power on the tool post would have made the groove pretty easy.Good job on the repair! JB weld is always the first option though.
Reply:Nice repair. Lacking a mill I imagine with some patience and careful work a guy could put the o-ring groove back in free hand with a die grinder or dremal tool.
Reply:The O ring usually always leaks on those anyway, I use Locktite 518 anaerobic gasket maker on the flange before I but them in.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I would second the anaerobic sealer. A paper gasket will let the compressor move and work against the flange, too. You want metal to metal. |
