I've been asked to do bronze overlays at work using our MIG welder.I do have welding experience and would like to know what process should be used with it.  Short-circuit, globular or spray or a combined method during build?Wire size is .045" and I am using a positioner (old lathe) with a self-advancing holder for the handle.
Reply:Hard to be specific without more info. What bronze alloy? Purpose of overlay?Generally I would prefer short-circuit transfer to minimize admixture.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:and remember,you need argon--not co2 or mix.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet
Reply:These are hydraulic cylinders that are rebuilt and the parts that receive the overlay are the pistons and sometimes bores.  Part size ranges from 4" to 20" diametersCurrently there is no pre-heat and short circuit is being used.  LOTS of spatter and smoke.I have preheated and spray welded with good build and speed, but it cuts harder in the lathe compared to earlier.Using pure Argon gas.
