I picked up a used but great condition Micro Torch with regulators. I am going to be welding on motorcycle gas tanks, generator gas tanks, car gas tanks, so this torch IS a Godsend for those things! It welds thin metal excellently! But there's a problem.I used them for the first time today, and while welding some 1/16" metal the torch suddenly surged and blew out. So I restarted it, and welded, and it blew itself out again with a surge. When I turn the acetylene flame on (With no oxygen) I will watch it periodically surge, so I do not think it is the oxygen. It is like someone is instantly turning the gas pressure up. I can't find any info on these regulators on the net. The fuel regulator says: "Victor Model MR-110P" and stamped into the casing: "Model No. 286.54070 Made in USA 3-74"The oxy regulator says: "Victor Model MR-100P" and stamped into the casing: "Model No. 286.54060 Made in USA 3-74"The handle says: "Victor Model M-175" and it has a "O" size torch tip. Help!Last edited by tundrawolf; 05-15-2010 at 12:40 AM.
Reply:A used torch like that, I would have rebuilt. Take both the torch and regulators to a competent shop, then you know that you'll be good to go.City of L.A. Reply:That is good advice. I will call around. Do you know if 3-73 is the date?

Reply:1, clean the tip2, check & replace o rings3, have a helper watch the gagues & figure out what is happening from there
Reply:surging is caused by a messed up diaphragm in the regulator.  some one it the past must have torqued it way too tight, and that will destroy the regulator causing surging.  you will probably need a new regulator.hope it helps
Reply:Check with these guys. They can tell you if it's cost effective to rebuild that reg vs replacing it.http://www.regulatortorchrepair.com/repairservices.php.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Dualie and Bistineau---From what I've seen over the last 5 years on this forum, regarding all manner of ignorant comments and ways to weld fuelrich tanks---it's pointless to discuss. The driving force is to do it NOW, do it CHEAP, do it FAST.Seeing anecdotal comments by some that 'W'all I've dun itthis way many times (exhaust gas, water filling, flashing offthe tank vapor, dump in some dry ice, etc.) without a problem....leads them and countless others to think that all these ways are proven to be 'safe'This is the same logic which affirms that one can speed thru red lights and stop signs, numerous times--without a problem....so that's 'safe' too! There's a particular blend of physics and chemistry involved with tank weldingwhich most are totally ignorant about--and apparently wish to remain so.Myself and others have repeatedly discussed, outlined--recognized,approved methods of this hot welding. We're a very small minority.I've done over 1500 tanks with a 'pop' and know how to make anytank either blow or not blow......the idiots don't know and don't care.Last edited by dave powelson; 12-16-2012 at 09:26 PM.Blackbird
