Bear in mind while reading this that I am (for now) mostly a self taught TIG welder. I was trying out my new Thermal Arc 185 and could not get the aluminum to weld at all. The welds were sooty and not clean at all .I tried adjusting all the settings( frequency, balance.etc.) and nothing worked. Now why can I weld with my HTP InverTIG 221 and not with the Thermal Arc 185???Then it dawned on me.................my tungsten was out too far. I am used to using a gas saver/lens on the 221. So I moved the tungsten in on the 185 and bingo.............welds great!!!I tried the gas saver/lens on the 185 with the tungsten out as usual and it too welded fine.Just goes to show that the smallest detail can't be overlooked!!!
