Feed Bunk

The girls have done well, and there's more calves (a whole slew of heifers too), so I need another feed bunk for cubes (pelletized protein supplemental stuff).  It's fed in addition to hay, or pasture grass.Anyhow, it's in progressAbout 70' of 2x2 11ga square tubingNow here's the STUPID thing  Instead of building the thing on saw horses, I started tacking it together on the table.  Seemed pretty fast and easy at the time  Well, I forgot this crap weighs around 3lbs a foot.  So now I got this 200+ pound thingy sitting on the bench, and it has to be set on saw horses to weld in the easiest manner (better access to all sides)Getting it down, and moving it wasn't pretty.  I'm sorta skinny, and not getting any younger.Almost got the finish welding done, woulda finished today, and we got the Mother Of All RainstormsSo there it sits until it dries out enough to finish.  Have to let all the moisture that got into the tubing dry out before I can finish it, otherwise I'll seal in moisture"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Very nice! how much do you figure you are saving by making it your self, compared to a commercially made unit, if there are even any available that heavy duty? Is this a copy of a feeder that you are currently using or is it a new design?

Reply:Did you consider plating instead of painting?We have a farm based plater here that does it 5 cents per pound, $50 minimum chargecheaper then painting most times and much more durable.

Reply:Youve got white faced cows Samm. But they dont look like Holstiens WTF?  They look like Angus with white faces. I could tell you about the white face cows in Texas in June after the rain but, it would have nothing to do with welding.

Reply:The story on the whitefacesWe had a bad spell when I couldn't get any of the bull calves to market about a year or so back, maybe longer.  That's a long story in itselfAnyhow, we had this ugly whiteface bull calf that got old enough to breed, and I had no way to separate him.My main black bull had gotten old, and sort of slow.The black bull was chasing the cows in heat, like he always does, but would forget about nookie while getting cubed.  While the idiot had his nose in the trough, the ugly whiteface young bull would sneak up and nail the cows in heat every chance he got  We got around 4 or maybe 5 whiteface heifers out of that fiascoThe old bull got crippled up fighting with the younger whiteface bull.  So when I did get everything lined out at the time, they both went to market.  I have another black bull now (a young one we saved as a prospect), and all's well in the world.  All the calves born this Spring have been black.I have one bull back of the older one now, and I'm seeing if the older one produces more heifers than bull calves.  I'd prefer growing the herd at this point.  Bull calves aren't what I'm aiming for right now.  If his ratio is good, then the younger bull goes to market.Maybe it's due to the drought, but a lot of guys have been lopsided in production around here.  Seems to be an overwhelming number of bull calves born the last 2 years"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Nature responding to a drought? Could be. I know around here deer have more twins in the good years. A few years back one had triplets, I saw them around for over a year. The triplets hung together after they left their mother.Leo
