I need another specialized strap winch for the flatbed.  The area directly over the tires always presents a problem, there's no clearance between the tires and rail for conventional type winches.  They hang down too far, and can cut a tire if the suspension travels too far.I made some that pin to the stake pockets, but I needed one that would work where there is no pocket, it has to hook to the rail. Here's the rub  Lincoln no longer supplies 7018AC in anything but a FIFTY POUND CAN  I like Lincoln rod, and swear by it.  So the only quick alternative was to grab some Hobart 7018AC which is still available in 5lb tubes.Anybody that knows me here knows that I use a lot of 7018AC.  I like the easy restrike for repeated short welds.  I work a lot with tubing, and it's handy to have a rod that lights up easy.  It's perfectly adequate for all in-position welds.I'm used to running Lincoln at 135amps, so I fired up the welder and did the first weld  The Hobart runs like crap at the higher amperage, lots of porosity.Turned it down to 120amps, and all was well. It's not bad stuff, and has a pretty rapid meltoff good for fast welds, and the slag is minimal.  I still prefer the higher amperage that Lincoln can handle, but this stuff is ok.  And the welds have the nice appearance associated with traditional 7018.The winch assembly is a two piece unit that allows it to be assembled easily with a pin.  The reason for the two pieces is that I have to be able to slide the hook up under the rail.  The long hook makes this a necessity.  The hook/flat has to be long in order to grab the rail at any setoff or angle.  The rub rails on most trailers are bent, and you have to compensate for any clearances.... max to minimum. When attached to the trailer, the rub rail limits travel outwards and keeps the hook under the rail.  The flat is 1/2" plate, not likely to bend under load.  The moment arm is not more than 2" at full extension from the edge of the rail.  In fact, the winch is stronger than the strap, or hook on the end of the strap which attaches to the opposite rail on the trailer. Our motto is: "The BEST products come straight from Uranus""Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Nice idea Samm, how many did you have to make? I always thought you use dc. Anyway, did you thread the bolt hole for the pawl? If not it looks like the nut/bolt end will get caught on the strap."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
