So I was looking for a rosebud to fit my Harris D-85 mixer and my new 145CF Acetylene cylinder. Looking at this chart: http://www.stoodyind.com/Catalogs/FISC/05catpg111.pdfit looks like I can only have the J-63-1 rosebud, and even then I must run it only at 2 PSI. (145/7=20.7) Does this sound right? If I wanted to use a J-63-2, which I have, I would need to manifold my 145 with my 75? When manifolding, how close do the pressures in the two cylinders need to be to each other? Thanks, BMiller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Your correct on the size heating tip ou can use with 145cf cylinder.   I would get a 20 lbs porpane cylinder. Get a  heating tip made for propane, it is safer and you do not have to worry about withdraw rates.JimOAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com
Reply:Thanks, now if I could just find a J-63-1 for less than $60. I looked into Propane but I'd need a different cutting attachment for Harris plus I could find no heating tips for my Harris setup.Last edited by bigb; 10-14-2010 at 11:31 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:What about running propane for the #2 rosebud you already own so you cannot overdraw it?Hooking your regulator to a BBQ bottle is all it will take to test. Some rosebuds work, some not as well. Some folks here had good Harris results:http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb...ropane-188000/I looked into Propane but I'd need a different cutting attachment for Harris plus I could find no heating tips for my Harris setup.

Reply:Not sure youre still looking for a rosebud solution, but I have the same setup you do (Harris 85, #3 tank) and coincidentally have been looking for the same solution. I came up with this site http://www.atlweldingsupply.com/where you can get a J-63-1 and a D-85 mixer for about $65.  That will work with your ace tank, as the min draw is 20 which the #3 tank can do (though the max is 35 which it cannot). I got the draw numbers for the -1 and -2 off of this site http://www.teamwork.com.sg/PDFs/Harr...20Catalogs.pdfwhich also gives you the BTU numbers.  Might help for what you want, but you might need to get a flow meter to make sure you don't over do it...
Reply:On another note, when you gang tanks, its typical for the manifold to be nothing more than a set of tubes that connect the tanks, ie no regulation until after the manifold.  That said, I've never seen differing size tanks ganged together; since volume is what you want in ganging, you'd size the individual cylinders as a divisor of the total you need.  I always thought of the tanks like batteries - you'd never hook a c-cell and a d-cell together, though you physically could, they will fight each other - the d will pull from the c rather than feed the load happily together.  However two d's (double D's wahoo!) will not do this.  I see tanks similarly....
Reply:Originally Posted by OAdoctorThat is correct, you could run propane with your rosebud you have.  It will not burn as hot as it would with a propane tip, but I doubt you would notice the difference.

Reply:So you're saying I could use my present torch and mixer/rosebud with propane? If so, why does Harris list a totally different torch and mixer for propane use? I'm really confused now
Reply:Ability to cool the head is important when using a rosebud.  I was led to believe that the increased flow rate for propane is a real important factor here.  When improperly cooled, a rosebud pops and backfires up into the tube.....not a good thing.I run a 145cf acetylene tank, and have had issues with the small rosebud it's capable of running.  Unless the rosebud is sufficiently far away from the steel, or it is at an angle to the steel, I get backfires.  I've had no such issues with my new propane heating setup.Setting up a dedicated cart is expensive, but heating with propane is the only way to go now that I've experienced it.  It's been a real eye openerIt's all about flow rate as far as I can tell"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I just ordered a Hobart D-85 mixer and a Hobart Rosebud. Both work great. I can't tell the difference from my Harris tips. Amazon has mixers for $20 and rosebud for $23 Good luckRG
