I'm being told that just using a small home mig welder with aluminum wire will not weld aluminum because it MUST BE flux core wire. I want to simply repair some small holes in an aluminum boat. Can I do this? Any special ways, needs or precautions?Thanx in advance-=Fred=-
Reply:This comes up a lot. There is no flux core alu wire. All alu wire is solid. What you would use would be .030 4043 or 5356 wire with 100% Argon. By home welder I assume you mean 120v. If that is the case, you are extremely limited as to thickness. 1/8 is pushing it, but can be done....just don't do anything critical.
Reply:Harbor Freight now has the flux core aluminum MIG wire. Use that for this project.Last edited by Bistineau; 10-06-2014 at 05:00 PM.
