How can you tell if a oxy. or ace. are privatly owned and what can you do if you have a bottle from a company that went out of buisness?
Reply:Bottles are stamped near the neck - top of the bottle. If they went out of business, take your bottles to another welding supply and ask if you can exchange them or get them filled.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:So if they are not stamped then they are OK.  My dad has a Oxy tank stamped "property of liquid carbonic" and i think there's a sticker for Chicago IL.  The guy that sold it to my dad about 7 years ago said the company had gone out of buisness.  Do you think this tank can be filled or traded? Its a 282 cf tank.
Reply:How about some of the smaller CO2 tanks, they normally don't have a stamp, how can you tell on those?  Sorry for my ignorance, i'm just trying to figure out what stuff i can use and waht i should throw away or sell.
Reply:Tanks are normally certified for 10 years. I would say take them all to your gas supplier and just ask.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Thanks for the quick replys Micro.  One more question, if they are only certified for 10 years does that mean that they are uselss after that time, or do you have to pay to pressure test them again, or will they just take them and exchange them for good ones?  And i guess the worst case senario is do they take them away to get them out of circulation and not give them back?Again thanks for the replys and sorry for the ignorance, and i will take them in im just wondering kinda of what to expect.

Reply:If you're just swapping bottles, you are in reality paying for testing/re-certification every time you swap. Paying plenty most likely. If it isn't a line item on the bill it'll be incorperated into the pricing in some fashion. Tanks go past date while out all the time. If you part of the paying pool it's all transparent to you.  If you're are unfamiliar to them you can't just walk in with a twenty year past date piece 'o garbage tank tho. It could have rust and spiders inside for all they know. They know what to look for at a glance.  About four or five months ago I was up at the LWS and they were telling this old guy to just leave his oxy tanks (2) in the truck, no need to take them out. The bottoms looked like they'd been setting in mud for ten years. They won't take them from you, they'll just tell you to anti up for a visual (when applicable) and pressure testing or take them home.
Reply:Thanks guys, I appreciate the info.  I'll take them in this afternoon.
