Hey y'all!!So, as you know, whether to push-or-pull the puddle when mig welding is an age old debate that everyone seems to have an opinion, and their own theory about...And I decided it might be cool to slice up some steel and arrange a good ole' fashioned smackdown to put these two tried and true methods to the test, and let me tell you, the results were NOT what I was expecting:[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEF61gyN5Gw[/ame]People will tell you, that pulling the puddle gives better penetration, and pushing it creates a wider, flatter bead profile... Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, but truth be told IMHO its personal preference 99% of the time...I found, in my test, that pushing the puddle will give you a slightly stronger weld... And my personal theory here is this happens because the flatter bead puts the metal where it counts, instead of on top of itself creating a "taller" weld...And besides, penetration isnt everything... I'd heard that the difference isnt that great on thicker material especially, so I guess I wasn't *that* surprised...As you know, a 6010 fillet weld, even with its deeper penetration won't take nearly as much abuse as an identical 7018 weld, even tho 7018 gives much less penetration...Anyway, it was a really fun test, and being that I couldnt leave well enough alone, I HAD to find out for myself  And this was my redneck test, and these were my results...I hope you all enjoy the video, and have an awesome week, everyone [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Cool vid bud! I see you had a guest over your right shoulder a little after 2min  I had one yesterday in my basement at my apartment, I had a plumber friend looking into a waste main problem and about a 4lb black water rat jumped out when we lifted the cover. He vanished into my junk pile and is still down there  I knew I saw a big shadow run behind some stuff a long time ago so he's been there a while. his nest is under the sewer main cover. Huge bro! Cheers on the vid, good job I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Haha yeah, we have a dozen or so barn cats that are pretty much self sufficient... Between what they find in our huge barns, and the 160 acres of field around us.+1 on getting good at uphill, I only run downhill mig filling large gaps on super no critical joints. Good luck! Reply:Hey Lanse, run the test again but this time beat on the push samples first so you won't be so tuckered out by the time you get to them and see if the results are any different. Either that or alternate from push to pull to push to pull.  Not saying there will be any difference 'cause I don't know that there will be but I have to believe arm fatigue has to have played at least a partial roll in your results. Also, averaging only two samples can be misleading IMO.  I think the vast difference in the two pull samples (31-vs.-54) failure results support that theory.  A third sample on either end of the two would make a significant difference - potentially an 8+/- point spread instead of only 3.5 points.  No doubt a more "scientific" method than wackin' 'em  to test for actual strength could be employed as burnt09 already pointed out but a nice general comparison just the same in being able to see the failure points.
