What can I put on or spary on mig wire to keep it from rusting.Silicone spray?WD 40Backroads
Reply:I'm not sure but I'd think any oil on the wire would eventually gum up the liner making it hard to clean. Some extra trouble, but if you don't weld often I'd nip the bead off the end, wind it up, take it out of the welder and keep it in the house so it's in a constant temperature invironment.  Your LWS should sell the little felt pads to fold over the wire where it goes into the liner and put a clothespin or butterfly paper clip over felt to wipe the wire off. If it's really rusty you may have to check/change the pad often.                                            JMHO,                                                     MikeLast edited by mla2ofus; 01-13-2013 at 05:05 PM.Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Using it keeps it from rusting.
Reply:Can you not use smaller reels and then take the home when you finish? Copper coated reels help, I had some esab reels which were in a damp environment and never rusted.I guess as well its the quality of the wire, normally the well know brands seem to fair better than the cheaper un branded wire
Reply:It only takes 15-30 seconds to nip the end and roll the wire back up.  I then store the wire in the house.  I have a shelf that holds several rolls of wire.  Now at the shop, it gets used faster than it can rust.  If there was a roll that wasn't getting used and had been opened it would be sealed in a bag with a packet of desiccant.

Reply:My shop mig is a Miller S52. I found a BBQ pit cover that was a perfect fit. I cover the feeder unit up every day when I close the shop up. It has worked great now for many years. The covers are cheap.
Reply:Get some cling-wrap, like you use in the kitchen. When not using the machine, wrap the spool with the cling wrap with a few silica packs inside. When ready for use, just unwrap the spool. Either replace your silica packs every once in a while, or dry them out in your oven, or by leaving them on or near a heater register... if you have forced air heating. If you already have rust in your liner, maybe try some Fluid Film... IDK, I have never had this problem, but I would much rather have some Fluid Film on my wire than a petroleum based lubricant.Check out my channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkz...bZg8AYNXGqBjZQ"Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of arms." - Aristotle
