hello, I am fairly new to welding. About 10 years ago i got about a half hour of stick welding and recently I have started learning mig at work (I work in a parts manufacturing plant owned by Russel Metals in the welding dept. as a helper). Unfortunately I am friends with pretty much everyone on the shift that I do my practice time so their opinions are more on the friendly side along with the tips they give me to become good enough to take and pass the CWB test that is required to weld for the company. Attached are photos of my welds of tonight and I would like everybodies opinions on them, more or less whats good and bad about them. Reply:All of the welds were done in the flat position with solid core wire on 1/2" mild plate with the mig settings of 28v and about 575ipm here are the final 3 pics from the practice session Attached Images
Reply:bumped
Reply:Other folks will probably help you out a lot more as I'm more knowledgeable in stick welding but at first glance I would think its way hot and maybe too much wire. Again I'm no expert on mig welding. I believe if you turn your machine and wire speed down you will have a better looking bead and more fun. . I wish I could give you some close settings but its been a couple years since I welded half inch plate with a mig and I can hardly remember what was for breakfast. Did you check for a chart under the hood of your machine? They typically have round about settings. I'll check my Miller Welds app and get back to ya. Other than that...not too shabby. Thanks for reading!
Reply:Here's what I got. Wire speed way high! Thanks for reading! Attached Images
Reply:hey, thats the same app I have on my phone, I guess I forgot to mention the welder is set up for .035 wire, with 1 hour 15min to gather material and practice I didn't have time to mess around changing the wire to .045 so I adjusted the wire speed to get that beautiful frying bacon sound  as for the specific settings sounding too hot, I agree but they are basically training me to "speed weld" in terms of running hotter and faster...  basically my practice alocation is 4:30pm till 6pm in that time I have to grab my gloves, mask, and grinder from my locker, search 5 different bins for scrap steel, prep the steel, weld, and finally clean up my work space. as a result I skip the prep work and grinder and grab what ever I happen to find for steel so those welds are a result of approx 3 hours of actual welding. Before anyone suggests specific techniques such as triangles, circles, or crescents, I did that on one of the welds and got corrected not to do any thing like that, the technique they use at work is to go ahead of the puddle and then let it catch up and repeat.
