guess this applies here since it may apply to welders anyways while doing research on compressors i ran across this statement on another forum if this is true just another reason to make sure a deal isn't to good to be true from a big box store FYI,I don't know about the compressors, but I found out recently something interesting with Lowe's and faucets, which applies to welders as well, and possibly the compressors. My wife and I were redoing the kitchen and went looking for faucets. We looked at a bunch of delta faucets at Lowe's. Delta faucets are supposed to be made in the USA. Lowe's pays delta for the rights to a specific model number, and b/c they are the only ones that can sell it, somehow work it out with delta that the faucets can be made overseas for cheaper with cheaper components (plastic parts instead of brass) and still be labeled Delta. We called delta to ask and this was confirmed by Delta. All Delta products are made in the USA EXCEPT anything sold at lowes. I also read that Lowes does the same thing with Lincoln and welders. They get a VERY minor difference, like a slight model number change or something, and then get Lincoln to lower the quality to save some money, like aluminum windings on the transformer instead of copper windings...So you think you are getting a good deal on something from Lowes and assume the price is due to Lowes buying in bulk, but in fact you are paying for an inferior product
Reply:That's always been the case. Or at least since I bought my first poulan chain saw from sears way back 19 and ott something. There are concessions for sure. I guess each generation has to figure it out.
Reply:Walmart started this crap of buying the rights to name brand from a company and slapping on the cheapest crap that could be made. Now every big bargain chain is doing the same thing. Do a web search for the man who said no walmart. Just try taking a John Deere lawn tractor bought a Lowes to a John Deere dealer for warranty work.Last edited by tresi; 08-26-2007 at 06:33 PM.
Reply:i am a farmer and use john deer tractors and have friends that are mechanics and mangers so for at the john deer in town and you should here us all laugh when some body usually a woman for some reason. brings her lowes john deer product in to get worked on. they had so many come in that they quit servicing those model mowers all together!!!!! i know the electrical supplys are chincy at lowes and home depot too. my electrician showed me the difference in the exact same labled packed excetera standard house wire. measured the insulation on the home depot stuff and then on the electical suppliers stuff big difference and also the diameter of the acutall wire was just slightly smaller on the home depot stuff. needless to say i have quit buying just about anything from these stores the old saying is true you get what you pay forwww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:I just **** myself. Oh wait, it was dry.Anyways, this is a bunch of CRAP! They need to clearly label the product "MADE IN KOREA" or wherever it was made. I hate funneling my hard earned money out of the US and into a 3rd world country.
Reply:i have since been puchasing from fasenall great store has about anything you want in industrial and commercial supplies 5 gallon resealable bucket of rocktight hydraulic cement a mere 35 bucks hell it is 15 for a tiny box at the hardware storewww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:There is a fastenal store in the town nearby us and I love the place, they don't carry a bunch of cheap crap and their prices are pretty good. I just wish they stocked more in the place, normally I go in with a list and 1/2 of it has to be ordered, though in a day or two it gets there.
Reply:it is the same way here birdunter i priced 7 inch grinding disk like 8 dollars a disk so i was like well how about a box oh well you can get a box for 32 dollars and it has ten in it. remeber they are a quantity seller best deal is in a bigger packagewww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:Exactly, the more you buy the better the price. Bolts especially, take up a list for the shop and go fill it. Beats the heck out of running to a hardware store and getting just what you need for one project. I haven't bought any grinding wheels from them because I saw the $8/per wheel price, but now I may look into it next time I need to stock up.
Reply:Remember that fastenal does most of it's business with commercial accounts, that is why. Similarly with welding supply stores, they deal mainly with shops, shipyards, contractors. So their 2lb rolls of innershield may be $7/lb, but a 33lb roll could be as cheap as $3. It costs a lot of money to keep a storefront for regular joes to come in and buy a few dollars worth of stuff. But not a lot to have one guy in the back dealing with commercial accounts. That is why I keep a commercial account with my welding supply store. I get a nice big discount.
Reply:we just got a fastenall awhile back and since its 1/2 mile from me ive gone there a bit cool store at least at harbor freight i know its most likely from china but i expect it there 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51 syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:It varies to some extent with the product, but if the price looks too god, bet on the product being lower in quality the the 'real deal'.One of the few things I will buy from HD is Pass&Seymour plugs and recepticles. The good line is (to all inspection) the same as from the commercial electrical supplier, except for coming in a plastic pak rather than a box. Price is within a few cents, as well. Ditto for SOME of the wires (SJOOW, for example.) Handy to know when someone runs over your extention-and-adapter cord bag with a forklift at 7PM.
Reply:From my experience, I wouldn't use anything but Price Pfister, anyways.
Reply:I was at my local plumbing store last weekend and they said the same thing about Delta and the "big box" stores. We wanted a replacement part and they said they couldn't help me if it was from HD. The wife was looking around their showroom at the new faucet stuff and was wondering how come it was so much more expensive than similar Delta stuff at the HD. I've heard this before and explained it to her dismay.True, you get what you pay for for most things, but smart shopping is still important. You just need to be aware of which type of products you can save on, what your needs are (sometimes cheap is good enough), and who rips you off.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene

Reply:i refuse to buy anything made in China, even if it costs more
Reply:The Lincoln Pro Mig 175 is assembled in Mexico, and as long as it functions how it should, I have a fine investment for the $35 (Brand New) I paid for it on clearance. |
